Sunderland has emerged as one of the most surprising teams in this Premier League season, facing a significant challenge tonight against title contenders Arsenal. Expectations were low for Sunderland, as the last six teams promoted to the Premier League were relegated the following season. However, the club made substantial investments over the summer, resulting in an impressive recruitment strategy that has allowed them to defy the odds. As matchday 11 approaches, Régis Le Bris’ squad sits in fourth place and boasts the best performance metrics in the Premier League, considering the investment made in assembling their team.

While the league table provides a clear view of a club’s performance, Transfermarkt evaluates additional metrics to assess whether clubs are utilizing their transfer budgets effectively or squandering funds on inadequate players. By calculating the total expenditure on each Premier League squad, based on initial transfer fees and dividing that by the points earned this season, we can create a cost per point analysis.
As shown in the graphic above, Sunderland tops the chart, having invested the least in transfer fees per point at €11 million. Remarkably, their squad was built at a cost of €205.63 million, yet they’ve accrued 18 points, equalling the tally of reigning champions Liverpool. Other promoted teams, Leeds and Burnley, also rank in the top five for cost-effectiveness, alongside second-ranked Crystal Palace. Sunderland was the tenth-largest spender globally in the summer transfer window, investing €188 million, a necessity according to owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus as they aimed to solidify their Premier League status.
“The statistics indicated that without making extraordinary efforts, relegation was likely,” stated Louis-Dreyfus. “We didn’t impose a strict budget on ourselves; instead, we set out to acquire the players we desired. Fortunately, many of the deals we aimed for were successful, leading to significant spending—but more importantly, we secured the players we wanted.”
Sunderland’s summer recruitment was exceptional, blending promising young talents with seasoned experience. Granit Xhaka has emerged as a pivotal signing, taking on the captaincy and becoming a key leader on the field. The club has seen great success in the French market with players like Habib Diarra and Nordi Mukiele stepping up as vital contributors. With promising prospects like Noah Sadiki, Chemsdine Talbi, and Robin Roefs, the future looks encouraging for Sunderland.
