I wanted to get your thoughts on Luke Shaw’s potential as a left-wing back, especially with players like [Noussair] Mazraoui and Amad heading to AFCON. Is Shaw an option for you in that position, or do you see him strictly as a centre-back?
“Absolutely, he can fill that role. The demands of playing left-wing back are slightly different, and if a player practices in that position regularly, he is better prepared for it. Luke is a smart player, and he’s fit right now, so I definitely see him as a viable option.”
You’ve spoken a lot about anniversaries lately, but on Monday, it will be a year since your first match. What do you recall about the lead-up to that Ipswich game? Moving to a new country and trying to get the team to adapt to a new style in just a few days must have been quite a whirlwind?
“It was definitely fast-paced. I quickly realized that the environment in the Premier League was vastly different, which was both exciting and daunting. I knew we would face challenges ahead! Yet, there was an undeniable feeling that we were in the best league in the world, possibly at the best club, but it also became clear that it was going to be a significant undertaking requiring considerable effort.”
When you reflect on what you witnessed on the pitch at Portman Road a year ago versus what you expect at Old Trafford on Monday, there must be significant differences in the team’s performance and mindset?
“Absolutely, we’ve made strides in those areas. However, it’s crucial not to forget our struggles from last year. We must approach every match with the mindset that each one is just as important as the last. I do expect to see a team that plays with more control and dominance, showcasing improved football, and most importantly, being more competitive across the board.”
