Chelsea’s current campaign has not gone as anticipated. The club finds itself in eighth place in the Premier League, having secured only one win in their last eight matches across all competitions. Amid the underwhelming performances on the field, Chelsea parted ways with head coach Enzo Maresca after a public disagreement regarding transfer policies. He has since been replaced by Liam Rosenior from Strasbourg, but this change has done little to assuage the frustrations of the club’s supporters. It appears that the team’s top players may also be contemplating their futures as we approach 2026.

As reported by the French outlet L’Equipe, Paris Saint-Germain has earmarked Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández as a significant target for transfer. While the Ligue 1 champions are not expected to pursue him this month, there could be a serious effort to acquire Fernández during the upcoming summer transfer window. The Argentine World Cup winner joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 for a record fee, making it the second-highest transfer paid by an English club. Could he be tempted to make a move to Paris?

Despite being a regular starter since his arrival, Fernández, 24, might be questioning whether this version of Chelsea is serious about contending for major trophies. Since joining Stamford Bridge, the team has finished 12th, 6th, and 4th in the league, currently lagging behind the top four. Although he has a Conference League winners medal to show for his efforts, this isn’t likely to satisfy a player who aspires to be among the best in the world. Thus, PSG’s ambition for Champions League glory could be an alluring prospect for the Chelsea star.

What has prompted PSG’s interest in Fernández? The Ligue 1 heavyweights already boast a talented midfield lineup, including João Neves, Vitinha, and Fabián Ruiz, as well as promising young player Warren Zaïre-Emery. According to Transfermarkt Ligue 1 expert Lucas Hybord, “Yes, PSG is looking to bolster their midfield, after missing the chance to do so last summer. Luis Enrique believed they had sufficient depth, but with Achraf Hakimi sidelined for two months and Zaire Emery filling in at right-back, PSG is left with only three reliable midfield options. Other players like Désiré Doué, Senny Mayulu, or Kang-in Lee could step in if needed, but Doué has also faced injury issues this season.”

In addition to the club’s injury challenges and the midfielders adapting to various roles, there are ongoing rumors surrounding the future of the midfield trio with whom Fernández would compete for a spot next season. Hybord commented, “There have been rumors linking Vitinha to Real Madrid recently,” while speculation also surrounds Ruiz about either a potential transfer or a new contract, depending on the reports. However, Hybord believes that even if PSG’s star midfielders remain, there will still be ample opportunity for Fernández next season. “I can see Fernández taking the place of Ruiz or Neves in the starting lineup,” he said. “Moreover, having four potential starters for three positions would certainly benefit Enrique in managing injuries, suspensions, and the demands of a long season.”
