Neymar is undoubtedly one of the most gifted players of his generation, perhaps even the most notable, yet opinions remain divided on whether he truly fulfilled his potential. For many years, Neymar ranked among the elite players globally, but his choice to leave European football for the immense financial rewards in Saudi Arabia at the age of 31 has undoubtedly influenced the perception of his legacy. Additionally, some critics have reproached him for departing Barcelona for PSG in what was the most expensive transfer ever, costing €222 million.

Despite this, Neymar's time in Paris was remarkable, amassing 197 goal contributions in 173 matches, although Ligue 1 is often viewed as less prestigious than other top European leagues. He was on course to realize his dream of winning a Ballon d'Or during his tenure at Barcelona, where he recorded 181 goals and assists in 186 games; however, that aspiration largely faded with his transition to France. Now 33, Neymar boasts incredible milestones in his illustrious career, including being Brazil's all-time leading goal scorer, surpassing Pelé. Injuries have significantly hampered his career, but could a fairy tale conclusion be on the horizon with his return to his childhood club, Santos?

Can Neymar achieve a swansong in his career?

Neymar's transfer to Al-Hilal turned out to be an unmitigated disaster on a sporting level, making just seven appearances over 18 months due to injuries. He returned to Santos in January, but a lingering hamstring issue limited his effectiveness. However, recent weeks have shown promise. The record goal scorer for Santos has completed full 90 minutes and scored three goals in their last six Serie A matches, marking the first time he has accomplished this feat in four years. His last stretch of six consecutive 90-minute games was at the end of the 2020/21 season with PSG, when they were eliminated by Manchester City in the Champions League semi-finals. Is Neymar finally overcoming his injury challenges, and what drives him in these final stages of his career? We consulted Brazilian football expert Marcos Watts for his insights.

“I believe it’s 99% related to the World Cup,” Watts asserted. “Neymar seems to have realized that after a few disappointing months back at Santos, it’s now or never to showcase that he deserves a place in Carlo Ancelotti's World Cup squad. The Italian coach didn’t include Neymar in his initial selection, and even though Neymar was dealing with injuries at that time, he possibly interpreted this as a significant sign.”

"He seems more focused on maintaining his fitness and form, and is involved in fewer off-the-field controversies, despite some recent heated exchanges with Santos supporters and a journalist. Although it seems unlikely he will ever achieve his ambition of winning the Ballon d'Or, finishing his career as a World Cup winner with Brazil remains a very attainable goal, especially with the upcoming 2026 World Cup on the horizon.”
