Market Value: €70 million
Xavi Simons has officially transferred to Tottenham from RB Leipzig. While a move to Chelsea seemed likely for much of the summer, the Dutchman will now be calling North London home. The transfer fee is reported as an initial €65 million, with an additional €5 million in performance-related add-ons, making Simons the most expensive player in Tottenham’s history—surpassing the €64 million fee paid for Dominic Solanke last summer. He also ranks as the third most expensive outgoing player from RB Leipzig, following the transfer of Benjamin Sesko to Manchester United earlier this season.
This marks Tottenham’s third acquisition from the Bundesliga this summer, having previously signed João Palhinha, as well as Mathys Tel, who spent the last season on loan from Bayern Munich. Tottenham’s total spending this transfer window has now surpassed €200 million, placing them among the top five clubs with the highest expenditures.
What Can Xavi Simons Bring to Tottenham?
The Dutch national team player has attracted interest from various clubs in recent weeks, including Chelsea—who are now seeking alternative options—and Bayern Munich. Ultimately, Tottenham has secured his signature. So, what type of player is Simons? After progressing through Barcelona’s La Masia academy, he joined PSG’s academy in 2019. His breakout season occurred at PSV Eindhoven, where he scored 19 goals and provided eight assists in the 2022/23 season on a free transfer from PSG, which included a €4 million buyback option that was later activated in summer 2023.
Instead of returning to PSG, Simons was loaned to Leipzig, a loan that was renewed for the following season, with Leipzig exercising a €50 million buy option last summer. This arrangement permits PSG to benefit from any future transfer. Leipzig stands to profit from this deal, but they will be losing a talented player on the pitch. As a classic playmaker who can also operate effectively on the wing, Simons has netted 22 goals and provided 24 assists in 78 competitive appearances for Leipzig.
He is an elegant player who has the ability to enhance the performance of those around him, though he can be inconsistent at times. His attitude has raised some concerns during his time at Leipzig, causing occasional friction in the dressing room. Nonetheless, when in form, Xavi Simons has the potential to shine at a world-class level. If Thomas Frank can help him maintain discipline, the Dutchman could become a standout star in the Premier League.
