The transfer window has been tumultuous and somewhat disappointing for Newcastle so far. Following their first trophy win in over half a century and qualifying for the Champions League, high expectations surrounded the summer. However, the club has struggled to secure several key targets, and star striker Alexander Isak remains training separately, seeking a move to Liverpool. On a brighter note, Newcastle has successfully acquired AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw, with both clubs confirming the transfer on Tuesday. The deal could potentially rise to €40 million. So, who exactly is this German defender, and why is Newcastle so eager to bring him to St James’ Park?
What can Malick Thiaw offer Newcastle?
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe expressed excitement, stating, “We’re thrilled to have Malick join us. He is a player I have admired for a long time and will undoubtedly enhance our defensive options. Malick is young but possesses valuable experience from Champions League, Bundesliga, and Serie A, which is crucial as we prepare for our return to European competitions this season.”
Newcastle’s need for a new center-back is pressing. While Sven Botman stands out as the club’s top central defender, injuries have plagued his time in the Premier League. The remaining first-team center-backs—Dan Burn, Fabian Schär, and Jamaal Lascelles—are all 31 or older, making it imperative for the club to inject youth and energy into their defense. Thiaw could be the solution. A product of Schalke, he made 64 first-team appearances before being signed by AC Milan in 2022. His playing time in Serie A has steadily increased as his skills have developed.
Standing at 1.94 meters, Thiaw is a commanding presence on the field, excelling in aerial battles. His height is matched by impressive composure for someone his age, and he possesses a solid passing range. Additionally, his game intelligence allows him to effectively intercept passes and block shots, often neutralizing threats before they escalate. With the speed to recover against fast forwards, Thiaw’s attributes will be advantageous in the demanding Premier League. Although his current market value is €18m—indicating that Newcastle may be overextending for him—there is no doubt he has immense potential that could see his value rise significantly in the coming years.
