Quick Overview

The Champions League group stage is nearing its end, with the final round of matches scheduled for next week. Despite having experienced one season of the new format, numerous questions still remain regarding this phase of the tournament, especially with the changes that have been implemented since the last season. At Transfermarkt, we have created a straightforward guide outlining the implications of finishing in various positions within the Champions League standings.

Which teams have secured qualification?
Currently, the only team guaranteed a spot in the round of 16 by placing in the top eight is league leader Arsenal, who remain undefeated. Additionally, the following ten teams are assured at least a position in the play-off round, meaning they will conclude the group stage in the top 24: Atalanta, Atlético Madrid, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Liverpool, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Sporting, and Tottenham.
For teams ranked ninth through 24th, their exact standings are crucial, as matchups in the play-off round depend on these rankings (9th vs. 24th, 10th vs. 23rd, etc.). Unfortunately, two teams are already confirmed to be eliminated from this season’s tournament as they cannot break into the top 24: Villarreal and Kairat Almaty.
Advantages of finishing in the top four and top two
New regulations introduced this season mean that positioning higher in the standings can facilitate an easier route through the Champions League knockout stages, especially regarding home field advantage. Teams finishing in the top four will have home advantage for both the second legs of the round of 16 and quarter-finals. The top two teams will also enjoy home advantage for the second leg of the semi-finals, ensuring that Arsenal has secured a home second leg all the way to the final, if they advance this far.
When are the knockout phase matches?
The play-off matches for teams finishing between 9th and 24th are scheduled for February 17/18 & 24/25. The round of 16 matches will occur on March 10/11 & 17/18, followed by the quarter-finals on April 7/8 & 14/15. The semi-finals will be played on April 28/29 & May 5/6, with the final taking place in Budapest, Hungary on May 30.
