The Reds went into halftime with a 2-0 lead, and a late surge of four goals in the final 10 minutes enhanced their victory against a Blues team that showed competitive spirit and created some solid pressure in the second half.
There was plenty to appreciate in Darren Fletcher’s squad, especially with three debutants on the field, including goalkeeper Charlie Hardy, who made an impressive early save to deny Joseph Ralph.
United quickly took charge of the match, with Junior Brown’s shot being stopped by a diving save from Szymon Terenowicz, and Gabriel also had an attempt thwarted by the Blues keeper. Thus, it was no surprise when the first goal arrived in the 17th minute, courtesy of a corner taken by full-back Jacob Watson.
Gabriel had a few more chances before finding the net just before halftime. Nkoto intercepted Isifu Drammeh and used his strength to set up Camacho. The midfielder, making his debut at this level, saw his shot pushed away by Terenowicz, but Gabriel was quick to follow up and score on the rebound.
Our number 10 then had another powerful attempt saved by Terenowicz before the halftime whistle blew.
