Since Unai Emery took charge in 2022, Aston Villa has defied expectations, reaching remarkable heights in the 21st century. From their Championship days in 2019 to playing in a Champions League quarter-final and triumphing over teams like Bayern Munich, the transformation has been extraordinary. However, the summer transfer window left many fans disheartened. The club struggled to effectively replace loan players Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio and was the lowest spending team in the Premier League with €30.5 million, lagging behind even Championship clubs like Ipswich (€59.3m) and Southampton (€56m).

The only significant addition was forward Evann Guessand from Nice for €30m, who has yet to make a significant impact in the Premier League. Despite a rocky start, not winning any of their first five matches, Emery has once again motivated the squad, positioning Villa in an impressive third place. This weekend, they face Arsenal, the league leaders, and a victory would narrow the gap to just three points.

The achievement of Aston Villa in the 2023/24 Premier League season was nothing short of miraculous, disrupting the status quo of the English top flight. Under Emery's guidance, the club overcame a lowly 17th position when he took over in the 2022/23 season, to breaking into the top four and clinching Champions League qualification.

Younger Villa supporters, who may not recall the club's glory days in the 1980s, often cite that season as their favorite. There was a palpable bond between the players and fans. If someone had predicted that within a year and a half of finishing in the top four, key players like Douglas Luiz, Moussa Diaby, Diego Carlos, Jhon Durán, and Leon Bailey would leave, shock would have ensued. Nevertheless, Emery has kept Villa competitive at the top level, successfully navigating player departures and aging stars.

As shown in the graphic below, only Arsenal (71) and Manchester City (68) have garnered more Premier League points than Aston Villa (64) throughout 2025. Their points tally surpasses even that of the reigning champions, Liverpool (61). Emery has rehabilitated players who were previously sidelined or out of form, propelling Villa back into contention as one of the league's in-form squads. Emiliano Buendía, who missed 69 matches with an ACL injury, has regained his place in the starting XI and is thriving with four goals and two assists this season.

After a sluggish opening to the season, star player Morgan Rogers has recaptured his form, highlighted by a remarkable brace in a recent 2-1 victory against Leeds. Donyell Malen is beginning to adapt to the challenges of the Premier League, while seasoned players such as Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Martínez, and Lucas Digne provide stability. Achieving this level of success at the top of the Premier League, especially with minimal summer investment, is a testament to Emery's remarkable coaching abilities.
