The January transfer window is typically much quieter compared to the extended summer period, yet significant deals still occur. While most clubs allocate their budgets for summer spending, some must invest in January to address immediate squad needs. Thus far, the first two weeks of this year's window have been relatively calm, with Antoine Semenyo's €72 million transfer to Manchester City marking the largest deal.

Historically, Philippe Coutinho's transfer from Liverpool to Barcelona in 2018 stands as the record January transfer at €135 million, although it ultimately turned out to be a poor decision. The January transfer window was introduced by FIFA at the start of the 2002/03 season, and using extensive data, Transfermarkt has compiled a list of the biggest spenders in the winter market.

Which clubs have spent the most during the January transfer window?

The timing of the winter window can vary slightly, so we analyzed spending from January 1st to February 4th since 2003, with data sourced as of January 15th. While some leagues have different transfer windows, the majority of European leagues adhere to the 'January window.' Unsurprisingly, Chelsea tops the list, having invested €747 million in new signings since the window's inception. The €330 million they spent in 2023 set a record for a single January window, and Enzo Fernández remains the second most expensive January signing ever at €121 million.

As shown in the graphic above, Manchester City follows in second place with €635 million spent during January, surpassing Semenyo's fee with Omar Marmoush's €75 million transfer. PSG occupies third place, while the top ten is predominantly filled with high-spending English Premier League clubs. Juventus is the only Italian club represented, with no Bundesliga or La Liga teams in sight. Barcelona ranks as the highest Spanish club in 11th place, while Real Madrid sits at 28th, and Wolfsburg leads the German clubs at 14th.
