Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who played for the Portuguese team Penafiel, tragically lost their lives in a car accident near Zamora, northwestern Spain. Just two weeks prior, Jota had married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, and the couple shared three children. The Portuguese striker had emerged as one of the Premier League's top talents, netting 63 goals and assisting 24 times in 190 appearances within the league.

Jota began his youth career at Gondomar in Portugal, later moving to Paços Ferreira. He signed with Atlético Madrid in 2016 for €7 million. His journey saw him on loan in Portugal and at Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League, where he made a permanent move in 2018. Jota then joined Liverpool in September 2020 for over €44.7 million.

During his time at Liverpool, Jota scored 65 goals across 182 appearances in all competitions, contributing to several trophy wins. He was part of the squad that claimed the FA Cup in 2020 and two EFL Cups in 2022 and 2024, culminating in a Premier League title last season. Additionally, he represented Portugal 49 times, finding the net 14 times for his country.

The Portuguese Football Federation issued the following statement: "The entire Portuguese football community is devastated by the loss of Diogo Jota and André Silva in Spain this morning. Diogo Jota was not only an exceptional player with nearly 50 caps for the national team but also an extraordinary individual who was respected by teammates and opponents alike. His infectious joy and exemplary character made him a role model in his community.

"On behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation and myself, I extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of Diogo and André, as well as to Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs they represented. We have requested UEFA to observe a minute of silence before our national team’s match against Spain at the Women's European Championship this Thursday. We have lost two champions; their untimely passing is an irreparable loss for Portuguese football. We commit to honoring their legacy every day."
