Tottenham hits 24 games: The longest home unbeaten runs in Europe

This season has been a letdown for Tottenham Hotspur, yet their strong performance in the Champions League has provided some comfort for frustrated Spurs supporters. Tottenham ensured their spot in the prestigious club competition by triumphing in the Europa League, even after finishing 17th in the Premier League. Although they ended a 17-year trophy drought, manager Ange Postecoglou was dismissed by chairman Daniel Levy, leading to the appointment of Thomas Frank as his successor.

However, under Frank, there have been no visible signs of improvement in the domestic league, with Spurs currently sitting in 14th place and eliminated from both domestic cup competitions. In contrast, they have seen much more success in the European arena, with a recent 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund propelling them to fourth in the Champions League standings, putting them in a strong position for automatic qualification for the knockout stage. Remarkably, Tottenham remains unbeaten in their last 24 home matches in European competitions, and we’ve explored how that records compare historically.

The Longest Unbeaten Home Record in European Competitions

We’ve examined data from the three main UEFA club competitions: the Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League. Firstly, it’s important to clarify a contentious match from 2021 against Rennes. UEFA awarded Rennes a 3-0 victory, declaring Tottenham forfeited the match due to an extensive Covid outbreak that prevented them from fielding a team. Since the game could not be rescheduled, it has been excluded from our analysis, as it was ultimately not played.

As indicated in the graphic above, Tottenham’s current unbeaten streak of 24 games is tied for the third longest in European history, according to Transfermarkt’s records. Notably, Tottenham’s run encompasses all three UEFA competitions and is on par with two other English clubs, Arsenal and Manchester United—both of which saw their streaks end in 2009. It seems unlikely that Tottenham will manage to go unbeaten in their next six home European matches to match Bayern Munich’s record of 30 consecutive unbeaten games at their former Olympiastadion home. The all-time record belongs to Barcelona, who experienced an exceptional 36-game unbeaten streak at the Nou Camp from 2013 to 2020.
