€85m tops the charts

Following a frenzied summer spending spree, Liverpool has remained surprisingly subdued during the January transfer window. Many supporters are eager for new signings, particularly a centre-back, but there have been few rumors regarding potential targets. Notably, the Merseyside club set a record for the highest spending in a single transfer window, investing €483 million in new players.
Liverpool made headlines by breaking the British transfer record with a €145m payment to Newcastle United for Alexander Isak. Unfortunately, the Swedish striker struggled significantly before suffering a serious injury. While there are still questions surrounding Florian Wirtz, some positive signs have emerged after a challenging start. Although Liverpool has yet to make any moves this month, the club has a history of securing significant signings during January, and we’ve examined their top ten record investments in the winter transfer window.
Top Record Signings for Liverpool in January
The most expensive signing in January for Liverpool is also one of their finest: Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch defender was acquired from Southampton for €85m in 2018, and he has proven to be worth every cent. The signings of Van Dijk and Alisson were pivotal in elevating Jürgen Klopp’s squad to Premier League and Champions League glory. As depicted in the graphic below, Luis Díaz’s €49m transfer from Porto ranks second; he is considered a success, especially after generating a significant profit for the Anfield club when he moved to Bayern Munich last summer.

Cody Gakpo rounds out the top three; despite his recent form, he has added depth to Liverpool’s squad. Luis Suárez comes in at fifth place, delivering remarkable performance as a January signing with 82 goals in 133 appearances in the iconic red jersey. Philippe Coutinho also features in the top ten, and his €135m transfer to Barcelona in 2018 remains Liverpool’s highest sale to date.
