For most newly promoted teams, the primary objective is to ensure survival in the Premier League. However, a few clubs adopt a more ambitious and costly strategy. While some teams tread carefully with conservative spending, others boldly flex their financial strength upon promotion. In the last two seasons, all three promoted clubs faced relegation immediately, a feat that had only occurred once in Premier League history. With the ever-widening gap between the Premier League and the Championship, ensuring survival has become increasingly challenging.

To stave off relegation, clubs often need to make significant investments, and promoted teams have been stepping up to the plate. Last May, Sunderland achieved promotion through a playoff win over Sheffield United, and they’ve been proactive in the transfer market this summer. The club has invested heavily, signing high-profile players such as former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka, alongside promising talents like midfielder Habib Diarra. Transfermarkt has analyzed the promoted clubs that have spent the most during their inaugural summer window back in the Premier League, considering if these investments have yielded results on the pitch. Where does Sunderland's bustling summer currently position them?

Nottingham Forest leads the charge after making significant investments in a range of new signings post-promotion in the 2021/22 season. The club acquired 13 players and spent a total of €155.2 million, narrowly avoiding relegation by finishing 17th in the 2022/23 season. In second place, Aston Villa, promoted in the 2019/20 season, spent €148.6 million in their following summer and successfully maintained their top-flight status, further advancing since then. Currently, before August even begins, Sunderland's summer expenditure ranks third on the list at €130.9 million, with expectations of additional spending before the transfer window closes, potentially surpassing Forest's total.

Two clubs promoted last season find themselves in fourth and fifth places. Ipswich spent €125 million, while Southampton invested €117.2 million—both unfortunately relegated. Fulham comes in at sixth having outlaid €113.1 million during the 2018/19 season, also experiencing relegation. Burnley, in the 2023/24 season, spent €110.5 million but faced similar outcomes. Wolves maintained their status with a €92 million spend in the 2018/19 season, while Leeds achieved survival after spending €89.2 million in the 2020/21 season. Leicester rounds out the top ten with an €88.1 million spend last term but ultimately faced relegation. Investment does not always guarantee success, but Sunderland has exhibited a high level of ambition in their return to the Premier League.
