For newly promoted clubs, the primary objective is often survival. While some teams approach the Premier League with a cautious strategy and modest expenditures, others make a bold entrance, quickly showcasing their financial power. In recent seasons, we have witnessed all three promoted teams face immediate relegation—an occurrence that previously happened only once during the Premier League era. The challenge of staying in the top flight is becoming increasingly difficult, as the disparity between the Premier League and the Championship continues to grow. Burnley had a rough start, suffering a 3-0 defeat against Tottenham, but Sunderland made headlines on their Premier League return by defeating West Ham 3-0.

To prevent relegation, clubs sometimes need to make significant investments, and newly promoted teams are certainly stepping up their spending. Last May, Sunderland secured promotion through a play-off victory against Sheffield United, and they have been aggressive in their recruitment this summer. Notable signings include former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka and promising midfielder Habib Diarra. According to Transfermarkt, Sunderland now leads the pack in spending among newly promoted sides following their recent acquisition of defender Nordi Mukiele from PSG for €12 million.

Sunderland currently tops the list, having spent a total of €165 million on new players this summer. Their most expensive signings include Diarra (€31.2 million) from Strasbourg, winger Simon Adingra (€24 million) from Brighton, and midfielder Enzo Le Fée (€23 million) from Roma. Their starting XI against West Ham featured eight new additions. Nottingham Forest ranks second after a substantial investment in 13 new players upon their promotion in the 2021/22 season, spending a total of €155.2 million and barely avoiding relegation by finishing 17th in the 2022/23 season. In third place is Aston Villa, who spent €148.6 million in the summer following their 2019/20 promotion, successfully avoiding relegation and improving thereafter.

Burnley, another team promoted this season, sits in fourth place, having spent €125.7 million this summer. Two clubs that returned to the Premier League last season hold the fifth and sixth spots: Ipswich with €125 million and Southampton with €117.2 million—both of whom faced relegation. Fulham spent €113.1 million in the 2018/19 season but also went down, as did Burnley after spending €110.5 million in the 2023/24 season. Wolverhampton Wanderers invested €92 million in the 2018/19 season and managed to stay up, while Leeds secured their Premier League status after spending €89.2 million in the 2020/21 season, rounding out the top ten. While big spending doesn’t always guarantee success, Sunderland's ambitious strategy upon their return to the Premier League has gotten off to an excellent start.
