Blackmore opened the scoring just before half-time, but a controversial penalty awarded by referee George Courtney, after Barnes fell following a challenge from Pallister, altered the course of the match. Just six minutes into the second half, Barnes converted from the spot, igniting a strong sense of injustice among the United supporters.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw, and, surprisingly, the Charity Shield was shared between the two teams. Both sides paraded the trophy around the pitch together, each allowed to keep it for six months. There was no penalty shootout, which, in hindsight, is unfortunate because I would have confidently wagered my house that Irwin would have scored, potentially winning over the fans even more quickly.
No matter, Irwin soon became a staple in nearly all-time United line-ups and would go on to collect far more trophies than just a shared Charity Shield. Little did we know at the time that Liverpool’s dominance was on the verge of ending and that we were poised to take their place.
Having the opportunity to know Denis Irwin as a club ambassador has been a true pleasure. I remember meeting him at Old Trafford with my father, who remarked that the fan-favorite was “exactly as I imagined he would be.” It’s a perfect encapsulation of Irwin—dependable on the pitch and genuinely likable off it.
