Luciano Spalletti has officially been appointed as Igor Tudor’s successor at Juventus. The former Napoli coach, who led his team to the Serie A title in 2023, has signed a contract that runs until the end of the current season, with an option for an additional year if Juventus qualifies for the Champions League.
After departing Napoli in the summer of 2023 to take a break from football, Spalletti found himself back in action when he took over the Italian national team. However, following a disappointing 3-0 loss to Norway that jeopardized Italy’s chances for direct qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he was replaced by Gennaro Gattuso. Before his tenure at Napoli, Spalletti had coached AS Roma twice, Inter Milan, and Udinese Calcio.
It was the same Udinese team that Juventus recently beat 3-1 under the guidance of reserve coach Massimo Brambilla, marking Juve’s first win since mid-September. The team had suffered three consecutive losses and had not scored in their last four games, leading to Tudor’s dismissal. Tudor had taken charge just last spring, replacing Thiago Motta, and secured a new contract after bringing Juventus into the Champions League.
Will Juventus Return to a Back-Four? New Signings Underperform
With Spalletti at the helm, Juventus has recruited an experienced and meticulous coach, which may explain why he was chosen over other candidates like Edin Terzic and Raffaele Palladino. It is expected that Spalletti will implement the successful 4-3-3 formation he deployed at Napoli, moving away from the back-three system that Tudor had adopted.
Moreover, Spalletti is expected to maximize the potential of the summer signings. Francisco Conceição has been permanently signed after a loan spell, while the club also acquired Edon Zhegrova, Loïs Openda, and Canadian forward Jonathan David. Unfortunately, these attacking investments have yet to yield the desired results, with Openda and David particularly struggling. Revitalizing their performance will be crucial for Juventus as they move forward.
