LAFC is closing in on signing Tottenham Hotspur legend Heung-Min Son. According to a report by The Athletic, the Major League Soccer team is making a strong push to acquire Son this summer. The Korean forward is entering the final year of his contract and was not included in the starting plans by new manager Thomas Frank. During a press conference in Asia for Tottenham's summer tour, Son stated, "Before we start, I want to announce that I've decided to leave the Club this summer. This has been the hardest decision of my career. I'll cherish the amazing memories."

With Son's contract running out in 2026, LAFC is working diligently to entice the winger to move to the United States, reportedly agreeing on a $26 million (€22m) deal. Once finalized, this move will make Son the highest-priced player in MLS history, surpassing the previous record set by Emmanuel Latte Lath of Atlanta United last winter. This summer represents Tottenham's last opportunity to secure a transfer fee for the 33-year-old. For Son, joining LAFC would ensure a starting position in a pivotal year leading up to the 2026 World Cup in North America. Initially thought to be an unachievable target, LAFC now finds itself in a strong position to secure the signing, especially following Son's announcement and with interest from other clubs.

With a market value of €20m, Son would be among the most valuable players in MLS, alongside LA Galaxy's Riqui Puig. In another move, Inter Miami CF has finalized the acquisition of Rodrigo De Paul from Atlético Madrid, valued at €25m. The potential arrival of both players could signal the beginning of a significant transfer wave among MLS clubs. Additionally, the Vancouver Whitecaps are nearing a deal to sign Thomas Müller from Bayern Munich. Although Müller was previously linked with LAFC, the club has focused exclusively on securing Son since the onset.

Heung-Min Son to LAFC – A transformative moment for MLS?

Son would rank among the league's biggest signings, boasting a substantial fan base in Korea and Southeast Asia. His transfer could elevate LAFC's profile within the local market, which is home to roughly 320,000 ethnic Koreans. As a well-known Premier League player, Son has netted 127 goals and provided 77 assists in 333 appearances. He recently won the Europa League with Tottenham, marking his first trophy with the club, potentially motivating him to embark on a new chapter in his career.

What would Son bring to LAFC on the field? Despite being 33, he would enhance LAFC's pace. Sources within the club have indicated a desire to prioritize speed, which was a key topic when discussing a potential addition of German playmaker Thomas Müller. The focus on Son illustrates LAFC's commitment to becoming quicker and more dynamic, concerns that do not apply to Son.
