Three goals in just two games

Rasmus Højlund is the latest player to rejuvenate his career after departing Manchester United. Over the years, many young talents have failed to realize their potential at Old Trafford, only to shine brightly after their exits, with Scott McTominay being a prime example.
McTominay struggled for recognition at United but thrived after joining Napoli last summer, helping I Ciucciarelli clinch the Scudetto and earning the Serie A Player of the Season title, as well as a spot in the Ballon d’Or rankings.
Rasmus Højlund’s Strong Start at Napoli
Initially, Højlund aimed to stay at United this season. However, the arrival of Benjamin Sesko limited his chances for regular play, prompting a move back to Italy on loan. Napoli paid an initial €6 million for his loan with a €44 million obligation to buy, contingent upon their qualification for next season’s Champions League—a scenario that appears very likely. The Danish forward has made an impressive start, netting four goals in his first six appearances.
With Romelu Lukaku sidelined due to injury, Højlund stepped up, scoring his third goal in just two matches during Napoli’s 2-1 victory over Genoa, earning high praise from manager Antonio Conte. “He’s a 22-year-old who was sidelined at Manchester United,” Conte remarked. “He has a lot of room for growth and, with hard work, he has the potential to become a star, and he’s showing that now.”
Højlund had seemed lacking in confidence towards the end of his time at United, but he looks revitalized in Naples. The young player scored twice in Napoli’s Champions League win over Sporting CP, both assisted by Kevin de Bruyne. At United, he was burdened by the pressure of the number nine shirt, following a hefty €77.8m transfer from Atalanta in 2023, which placed unfair expectations on him as a young player.
Although Højlund displayed flashes of talent during his debut season, he struggled in his second year amidst what many consider the worst United team in modern history. Early signs at Napoli, however, are very encouraging; he averages 0.77 goals per 90 minutes, significantly higher than his United rate of 0.37. While still early in the season, Højlund’s potential is undeniable, and Manchester United may come to regret their decision to let him go permanently.
