<p>Within the ever-evolving landscape of Premier League spending, midfielders have emerged as the core of high-value teams, reflected in their substantial price tags. The top modern midfielders are versatile playmakers, tenacious pressers, skilled ball-winners, and decisive match-winners—all in one package. Clubs are now eager to invest heavily to secure top talent. Notably, four out of the five most expensive transfers in Premier League history involve midfielders. With these record-breaking fees come high hopes, intense scrutiny, and the expectation to perform exceptionally from the very first touch. <em>Transfermarkt</em> has analyzed the figures and presents the 20 most expensive midfielders in Premier League history.</p>

<p>Leading the charge is Liverpool's recent signing of attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz, who transferred this summer for a record-breaking fee of €125 million from Bayer Leverkusen. Hot on his heels is Chelsea's €121 million acquisition of Argentinian center-midfielder Enzo Fernández, who joined from Benfica in January 2023. Following closely is Arsenal's €116.6 million signing of West Ham captain Declan Rice in the summer of 2023, and Chelsea's €116 million deal for Moisés Caicedo from Brighton that same summer ranks fourth. Completing the top five is Manchester United's €105 million transfer for Paul Pogba from Juventus in 2016.</p>

<p>In sixth position, we find Manchester City icon Kevin De Bruyne, who was acquired from Wolfsburg for €75 million in 2015. Man United's €70.7 million signing of Brazilian defensive midfielder Casemiro from Real Madrid in 2022 comes in seventh. Arsenal invested €70 million in Spanish midfielder Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad this summer, placing him eighth. Equaling that amount are Liverpool's Dominik Szoboszlai, who joined in 2023, and Manchester City's Rodri, who transferred in 2019, ranking ninth and tenth, respectively.</p>
