The transfer window officially closed on Monday night for the majority of top leagues, following another whirlwind deadline day. Alexander Isak’s lengthy transfer to Liverpool was finalized for a Premier League record fee of €145 million. Although many leagues, such as the Süper Lig and the Saudi Pro League, still allow player sales.

This transfer window has been marked by significant spending, with clubs investing heavily to strengthen their squads. In total, expenditure across the window surpassed €9 billion, setting a new record by exceeding the previous season’s total of €8.86 billion. So, which clubs made the highest outlays on transfer fees this summer? We’ve analyzed the data from Transfermarkt to find the answers.

Top Spending Clubs of the Summer Transfer Window

Remarkably, nine out of the top ten clubs that spent the most this summer hail from the English Premier League. The collective expenditure of the 20 clubs exceeded €3 billion, with Liverpool leading the way by investing €482 million in new players. The top three most expensive signings were all secured by Liverpool: Isak, Florian Wirtz, and Hugo Ekitiké. Despite making €220 million through player sales, Liverpool ranks second for net spend at €262 million, trailing Arsenal, who recorded the highest net spend of €282 million.


The graphic above displays Chelsea as the second highest spenders with €328 million dedicated to new players. Interestingly, Chelsea has generated the most from sales at €322.25 million, resulting in a positive net balance of €4 million this summer. Arsenal, Newcastle United, and Manchester United round out the top five in total spending, while newly-promoted Sunderland also made it into the top ten. Bayer Leverkusen is the only non-English club in this list, with Barcelona significantly lower in 80th place.
