Announcement
Charlotte FC striker Patrick Agyemang has officially transferred to Championship side Derby County. The move was initially reported by Steven Goff of the Washington Post in late June but was delayed due to the US men’s national team’s progress in the Gold Cup. The transfer became official on Tuesday, July 15, after the USMNT reached the final and lost 2-1 to Mexico. With the tournament now over, Agyemang is set to undergo his medical examination and finalize his contract with Derby County.
This transfer marks a historic moment for Charlotte FC. Transfermarkt confirms that the Major League Soccer club will receive an initial fee of $8 million (€6.8 million), along with a potential $2 million (€1.7 million) in add-ons. The agreement also includes standard clauses for a percentage of any future sale, typically ranging from 10-20% based on the timing of the transfer. The initial fee alone makes Agyemang the most expensive outgoing transfer in Charlotte FC’s history.
Agyemang began his career playing for the University of Rhode Island and later for the Western Mass Pioneers in the USL League Two. He was drafted 12th overall in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft by Charlotte FC. At just 24 years old, he scored ten goals in 11 games for Crown Legacy in MLS NEXT PRO before moving to the first team ahead of the 2024 season. There, he scored ten goals and provided three assists in 31 regular-season matches. This season, he has contributed six goals and one assist in 16 MLS regular-season games.
USMNT Player Agyemang Joins Derby County
Considering his MLS performance, US men’s national team coach Mauricio Pochettino included Agyemang in the January roster. Standing at 193 cm, he has netted five goals across 12 international appearances. During the recent Gold Cup, Agyemang played all six matches, yet his scoring was less prolific, with goals against Trinidad & Tobago and Haiti.
To further his development, Agyemang must work on his consistency as a goal scorer. Although he excels with his physicality and ball strength, he sometimes struggles with his first touch and efficiency in tight spaces inside the box. Nonetheless, his stature and strength suggest he has the potential to be a significant player in the English Championship.
