Six consecutive 90-minute matches
Neymar is widely recognized as one of the most gifted players of his generation—perhaps the most talented. However, opinions are divided on whether he truly fulfilled his potential. For many years, Neymar was consistently ranked among the world’s elite, yet his choice to leave European football at the age of 31 for the lucrative opportunities in Saudi Arabia may have affected his legacy. Critics also pointed to his high-profile departure from Barcelona to PSG in a record-breaking €222 million transfer as a controversial decision.
During his time in Paris, Neymar excelled, contributing 197 goals in 173 appearances. Nevertheless, Ligue 1 is often viewed as less prestigious than other top European leagues. Neymar was on course for his dream of winning the Ballon d’Or at Barcelona, recording 181 goals and assists in 186 matches, but his aspirations for the award were likely dashed with his transfer to France. Now at 33, Neymar boasts remarkable records, including being Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer, surpassing Pelé. Although injuries have plagued his career, could there still be a fairytale finale with the national team as he returns to his childhood club, Santos?
Is Neymar poised for a career swansong?
Neymar’s stint at Al-Hilal was marked by a footballing setback, as he managed only seven appearances over 18 months due to injuries. He returned to Santos in January, but a hamstring issue limited his contributions. However, recent performances have shown promise. As Santos’ all-time leading scorer, Neymar has completed full 90 minutes while netting three goals in his last six Serie A games, marking the first time he has done so in four years. The last instance was at the end of the 2020/21 season with PSG, during their defeat to Manchester City in the Champions League semi-finals. Could Neymar be overcoming his injury struggles, and what drives him in the latter stages of his career? We consulted Brazilian football expert Marcos Watts for insights.
“I believe it’s 99% related to the World Cup,” Watts remarked. “I think Neymar realizes that after a few disappointing months back at Santos, it’s now or never for him to secure a place in Carlo Ancelotti’s World Cup squad. The Italian coach did not select him in his initial squad for Brazil, and although Neymar had been injured or recovering, he likely viewed this as a wake-up call.
“He seems more committed to maintaining his shape and fitness, and has been less embroiled in off-field controversies, despite a few recent disputes with Santos supporters and a journalist. While it’s improbable that Neymar will achieve his goal of winning the Ballon d’Or, finishing his career as a World Cup winner with Brazil remains a tangible ambition, especially with one last chance at the 2026 World Cup on the horizon.”
