Newcastle optimistic about signing Anthony Elanga - How the Swede could enhance a formidable front three

Newcastle United is reportedly eyeing one of the most exciting attacking upgrades in the Premier League this summer by pursuing a former Manchester United talent. According to recent reports, the Magpies are nearing a deal for Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga, whose impressive speed and direct approach have captured the attention of Eddie Howe’s recruitment team. After having an initial bid of around €52 million turned down last month, they have now returned with an offer of approximately €64 million, which they anticipate will be accepted.

At just 23, Elanga had a standout season at the City Ground, and a transfer to St. James’ Park could help him form one of the most potent forward lines in the Premier League. Alongside Swedish striker Alexander Isak and the steadily improving Anthony Gordon, Elanga could contribute to a dynamic, high-pressing, and creatively potent front trio, capable of unsettling defenses both in England and across Europe. Transfermarkt examines the potential acquisition and how Newcastle’s attacking line could thrive in the 2024/25 season.

What Anthony Elanga Could Bring to Newcastle

Last season, only Mohamed Salah and Newcastle’s own Jacob Murphy provided more assists in the Premier League than Elanga. He played a vital role for Forest, forming an effective partnership with Chris Wood, and he would be eager to replicate that with Isak should he finalize a move to St. James’ Park. In addition to creativity, Elanga brings exceptional pace and relentless energy—key elements of Newcastle’s game plan under Howe. His speed is unmatched, and he consistently maintains high levels of work rate.

As shown in the accompanying graphic, a Premier League study revealed that no player sprinted for a higher percentage of their playing time than Elanga last season (1.17%). Notably, second on that list is Newcastle’s left winger Gordon (1.10%), underscoring the dynamic potential of their front three for the upcoming season. This ability will enhance Howe’s strategy by enabling quick passes behind defenses and utilizing the wingers’ speed. Additionally, both Gordon and Elanga possess the stamina to track back and support their full-backs.

With Isak’s extraordinary talent leading the line, Newcastle would have a formidable attacking trio that aligns perfectly with Howe’s approach, blending work ethic with skill. Elanga (€42 million), Gordon (€65 million), and Isak (€120 million) together represent a combined market value of €227 million, and all three are 25 or younger. Only Manchester City (€380 million) and Arsenal (€270 million) can claim a more valuable attacking lineup. As Champions League football returns to the North East next season, Newcastle must strengthen their squad this summer, and signing Elanga could add a significant new element to their attack.
