In recent years, the financial landscape of football has spiraled out of control, with clubs investing hundreds of millions each season to assemble top-tier squads. But which managers have been the biggest spenders in the history of football? While the modern structure of clubs means that managers aren’t solely responsible for player transactions, they certainly reap the rewards of significant spending. At Transfermarkt, we’ve put together a list of the managers who have made the largest financial commitments, showcasing some of the most renowned names to have occupied the managerial seat over the past few decades.

Top Managers in Transfer Spending

At the top of the list is the winning machine, Pep Guardiola. During his tenures at Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, the Spanish manager has invested a staggering €2.45 billion in players. His impressive trophy haul of 39 titles illustrates that much of this expenditure has yielded positive results. His record purchase was Jack Grealish, acquired by Man City from Aston Villa in 2021 for €117.5 million.

In second place is José Mourinho, affectionately known as 'the Special One.' The Portuguese manager has spent €1.96 billion throughout his career while collecting 26 trophies. His most expensive acquisition was Paul Pogba, who Manchester United signed from Juventus for €105 million in 2016. Third is the legendary Carlo Ancelotti, the current Real Madrid manager, who has spent €1.79 billion and won 31 trophies during his illustrious career. Following closely is Atlético Madrid's Diego Simeone, who has also invested €1.52 billion during his managerial journey.
