After nearly two years away from professional play, Paul Pogba is set to return to football and join Ligue 1 club Monaco. The transfer was officially announced on Saturday. Following his last match for Juventus against Empoli in September 2023, Pogba faced a suspension due to a failed drug test from August. Initially banned for four years in February 2024, his suspension was later reduced to 18 months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, allowing him to start training in January and lifting the ban in March.

Last November, Pogba and Juventus mutually agreed to part ways, leaving the 32-year-old searching for a new club. Despite speculation linking him to destinations such as the United States or Saudi Arabia, Pogba ultimately signed a two-year contract with Monaco. The question remains: can Pogba regain his best form after nearly two years away from the pitch?

Paul Pogba: Can He Make a Successful Comeback?

It is challenging to predict how long it will take Pogba to regain full match fitness after such a lengthy absence. At his peak, he was among the world's top midfielders, but injuries severely hampered his return to Juventus prior to his suspension. As shown in the graphic below, Pogba played only 12 matches in over a year after rejoining from Manchester United, missing out on 57 matches due to injury.

Pogba is determined to revitalize his career at Monaco, where he'll also compete in the Champions League after the club finished third last season. This will mark his first experience in Ligue 1, and he will join a talented group of young players at Monaco. Ligue 1 expert Joachim Durand commented on the excitement surrounding Pogba's signing, stating, “There is widespread excitement in France about Pogba signing for Monaco. Everyone is hyped, or at least intrigued. Personally, I'm somewhat skeptical. I want to believe it, but at 32 and after such a long absence, I have significant doubts. However, his mentality seems optimistic, as he feels like a young player arriving at a training center.”

Can Paul Pogba Earn a Spot on the French National Team for the World Cup?

While it may seem far-fetched, Pogba is undoubtedly motivated to return to the French national squad for next summer's World Cup. Durand believes it's a distinct possibility: “I think he holds the keys to a return to the French national team. Didier Deschamps has a high opinion of him and recognizes the rarity of a player with his skill set, both on and off the pitch. Deschamps has shown commitment to his players, as seen with Kanté's recall for Euro 2024. Monaco's participation in the Champions League is also crucial to Deschamps, as he views it as the closest competition to international play. Therefore, if Pogba performs well, he could make a comeback.”
