Looking back to mid-March, Newcastle fans were ecstatic. After a 50-year wait for silverware, the Magpies finally clinched a major trophy, defeating Premier League champions Liverpool 2-1 in the EFL Cup final. Coach Eddie Howe’s team not only secured Champions League football but also possesses the richest ownership in the league, along with some leniency regarding financial fair play regulations. Anticipation was high around St James' Park this summer. However, as we approach August, Newcastle's transfer window has been nothing short of disastrous. The allure of London as a more glamorous destination, particularly for foreign players, presents a significant challenge for the club this summer.

The north-east club has missed out on a considerable number of their primary targets. So far, their only signings include Anthony Elanga for €61.4 million from Nottingham Forest, goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on loan, and young talent Antoñito Cordero on a free transfer. Compounding matters, star striker Alexander Isak has expressed his desire to join Liverpool, making this summer particularly challenging at St James' Park. RB Leipzig’s striker Benjamin Sesko appears set to reject Newcastle in favor of a move to Manchester United, adding to an appalling list of players who have turned down a move to Newcastle this summer.

Newcastle's Rejection List

Nine prominent players have reportedly declined moves to Newcastle this summer, starting with the highest-profile target. French striker Hugo Ekitiké, valued at €75 million, was on the Magpies' radar but ultimately chose Liverpool in a €95 million deal. To make matters worse, Liverpool is now pursuing the very player they intended to replace with Ekitiké: Isak. As tensions rise concerning striker acquisitions, Newcastle's attempts to woo RB Leipzig’s Sesko (valued at €70 million) have failed as he seems poised to join Manchester United. Earlier this summer, Newcastle also targeted Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen (valued at €55 million), but the player preferred a move to Real Madrid.

Winger Bryan Mbeumo (valued at €55 million) was another top prospect but opted for a transfer to Old Trafford instead. Newcastle also showed interest in Brighton’s João Pedro (valued at €50 million), only for the Brazilian to move to Chelsea. They also pursued West Ham's Mohammed Kudus (valued at €45 million), but he chose Tottenham instead. Newcastle's long-term interest in Crystal Palace captain Marc Guéhi (valued at €45 million) has seen little advancement, with Liverpool now leading the chase for his signature.

Ipswich's Liam Delap (valued at €40 million) was another target, but he is now at Chelsea, while Newcastle devoted much of the summer to acquiring goalkeeper James Trafford (valued at €22 million), who ultimately returned to Manchester City. Collectively, these nine players represent a staggering market value of €457 million. Newcastle has faced significant setbacks, struggling to attract top talent. Off the pitch, the club has been embroiled in turmoil, with boardroom power struggles resulting in the departure of key figures. Eddie Howe has even been involved in the recruitment process early in the summer, raising concerns about the club's attractiveness to potential signings. What should be an exciting time turned out to be less than favorable for Newcastle.
