Agreement on Fee Reached
Tottenham Hotspur is on the verge of an unconventional signing as they approach the completion of their second transfer this summer. Multiple reports suggest that the North London club is finalizing the acquisition of Kawasaki Frontale star Kota Takai. The 20-year-old defender is anticipated to join the Premier League in the coming days for a fee around €5.8 million, making him the sixth most expensive player sold from the J-League in its history. So, who is this young defender, and what could he bring to Tottenham?
Assessing Kota Takai’s Talent
Takai, who emerged from Kawasaki Frontale’s youth academy, debuted for the senior team in an AFC Champions League match against Guangzhou on April 18, 2022, at just 17 years and seven months old, making him the club’s youngest debutant. He had to wait nearly a year before appearing in the J-League for the first time at 18 years and seven months, ranking as the sixth youngest debutant in the club’s history. Since then, he has significantly improved while playing for the “Azzurro Nero.”
“Even while still in his second year of high school, he signed a professional contract with Kawasaki Frontale, becoming the club’s youngest player to do so,” remarked Yuta Izawa, a data scout for Transfermarkt in Japan, reflecting on Takai’s rise. “Expectations were high from the beginning, especially considering the club’s history of producing talents like Kaoru Mitoma (Brighton), Ao Tanaka (Leeds), Ko Itakura (Borussia Mönchengladbach), and Reo Hatate (Celtic). In the summer of 2022, while still on the U18 team, he even participated in a preseason match against PSG.”
After making 28 appearances last season, Takai solidified his spot as a first-choice central defender. Following notable performances during the Olympics with Japan’s national team, he made his debut for the senior squad last September in a 7-0 victory over China in the Asian World Cup qualifying rounds. “His name gained recognition across Japan due to his performances on the international stage,” Izawa noted. “At the club level, he earned a regular spot last season and was named the J.League’s Best Young Player.”
By this time, Takai was regarded as one of Japan’s most promising defensive talents, which has been reflected in his rising market value over the last year. Currently valued at €2.5 million, he is the most valuable player in his squad and the third highest in the entire J-League. Moreover, his market value has increased by an incredible 456% in the past year, significantly outpacing the second highest increase in the league.
Recently, Takai was instrumental in his team’s journey to the final of the AFC Champions League Elite, playing every minute of the knockout stages. In particular, he played a vital role in overcoming Al-Nassr from Saudi Arabia, with star strikers Jhon Durán and Cristiano Ronaldo failing to score as Takai helped his team secure a 3-2 victory. Although the J-League team lost the final to Al-Ahli 2-0, the tournament has undeniably raised Takai’s profile on the international stage and showcased his capabilities against top talent.
What are Takai’s key attributes? According to Izawa, he possesses the essential skills needed to thrive in a demanding league like the Premier League. “He’s tall and dominates aerial duels, with outstanding heading ability,” noted the J-League expert. “Physically strong and quick, he rarely gets outmuscled. He excels in building play from the back, but his greatest strength is his composure in critical matches—he remains calm under pressure.”
Why Tottenham is Adding Kota Takai?
Standing at 6ft 4ins and demonstrating proficiency in dribbling and passing, Tottenham believes Takai is prepared for the transition from the J-League to the Premier League. However, it remains to be seen whether he will be integrated directly into Thomas Frank’s first-team plans or potentially loaned out for further development. A quick look at Tottenham’s roster for the upcoming season emphasizes the stiff competition Takai will encounter for a starting position.

Notably, alongside first-choice defensive duo Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, Takai will face competition from Radu Drăgușin and Ben Davies. Additionally, Ashley Phillips will be returning from a loan at Stoke City. To complicate matters, he will also compete with new signing Luka Vuskovic, who is joining from Hajduk Split for €11m after a successful stint in Belgian football at Westerlo. Even if Tottenham chooses to sell a few of these players this summer, Takai will still have three or four experienced players to contend with.
Nonetheless, Izawa is optimistic about Takai’s prospects in England. “Yes, I think he’s ready,” he stated. “His primary strength is his calmness even on the international stage. During the Champions League semi-final, he played a crucial role in the victory over Al-Nassr by keeping Ronaldo and Durán at bay. While it’s challenging to predict exactly how well he will perform in the Premier League, he undoubtedly has the potential to compete at that level.”
