6th in Premier League history

Maxime Estève faced a challenging outing at the Etihad Stadium, making Premier League history as only the sixth player to score two own goals in a single match. His unfortunate double, occurring on both sides of halftime, contributed to Manchester City’s impressive 5-1 victory over Burnley. In the eighth minute, the 23-year-old defender misdirected a clearance into his own net following a save from Martin Dubravka on Jérémy Doku’s effort. His second own goal came when he deflected a low cross from Savinho past his own goalkeeper under pressure from Oscar Bobb. Although Jaidon Anthony had briefly equalized for Burnley, Estève’s second own goal set the tone for the match, eventually leading to goals from Matheus Nunes and a late brace by Erling Haaland to seal the victory.
The French defender now joins an unfortunate group of players who have scored twice in their own net during a single game. He is the first player to achieve this since Craig Dawson in December 2024, when he scored two own goals in a 4-0 defeat against Everton. Additionally, Wout Faes is the only other player to do so this decade, as his two own goals led to a 2-1 loss for Leicester against Liverpool. Remarkably, no player had ever scored a hat-trick of own goals in Premier League history before Saturday, so Estève can breathe a sigh of relief that he didn’t become the first to reach that dubious milestone in the league’s 33-year history.

Estève is not alone in this misfortune; Jonathan Walters for Stoke City and Sunderland’s Michael Proctor also faced a similar situation, with their own goals coming in 2013 and 2003 respectively. The first player to earn this dubious honor was Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, whose errant goals aided Manchester United in a 3-2 victory over Liverpool in 1999. While Estève’s experience was unfortunate, he still has a long way to go to reach the all-time own goal record set by Richard Dunne, who scored 10 own goals during his Premier League career before retiring in 2015. Among current players, Brighton’s Lewis Dunk is tied for second on the all-time list with other notable players including Zak Knight, Phil Jagielka, and Carragher. With two own goals already to his name, Estève will hope that this unfortunate day is merely an aberration in his career.
