Regarding set pieces, was this an area you and your coaching staff identified as crucial to focus on during pre-season? Notably, you’ve managed to score as many goals from set pieces as Arsenal, who are widely considered one of the best in Europe in that aspect. You mentioned borrowing ideas from others; did you look specifically at their strategies? Additionally, moving forward, is enhancing the defensive aspect of set pieces now the next priority for your team, given the strength of your attacking set pieces?
“Absolutely, I believe our attacking performance on set pieces has been stronger than our defensive approach. In defending set pieces, it’s important to regain possession. Nowadays, in the Premier League, when attacking, it’s not just about making contact with the ball; it’s about positioning to prevent defenders from clearing it for a second opportunity. The dynamics of defending and attacking are quite different. While I won’t disclose which teams we’ve taken inspiration from, we learn from everyone; there are many intelligent managers out there with innovative strategies. When selecting the squad, factors like player availability, especially someone like Casemiro, are vital. We learned this from our match against Tottenham. Balancing the game plan is crucial; it isn’t just about our attacking approach but also how we defend set pieces. Today’s league demands that you consider both aspects. Set pieces can significantly influence the game; scoring from one can put you in a better position to win. That’s why we dedicate considerable attention to set pieces during pre-season and continue to prepare for them each week.”
You mentioned this summer that addressing set pieces was a key focus going into the season, correct?
“Absolutely, we faced significant challenges initially. Early on, we really struggled with set pieces. However, as time went on, we learned and adapted, much like any manager would.”
With Josh Zirkzee stepping up due to injuries and making an impact, coupled with Kobbie Mainoo still seeing limited play, you’ve previously noted that players not in the lineup might reconsider their positions, especially with the World Cup upcoming. As the number of games increases in December, will Kobbie have an opportunity to showcase his abilities before the January transfer window?
“We’ll have to wait and see. We can discuss both Kobbie and Manuel Ugarte, who also hasn’t had much playing time. Josh is getting his chance due to multiple injuries, which is a reality of football. It’s essential for players to be ready when opportunities arise. My primary focus is on winning; I don’t factor in personal relationships when making decisions. I’ll select the best players for each game. With an increased number of matches, if circumstances change, players will have their chance. If they’re prepared and perform well, they won’t be sidelined for any reason. My goal is to always choose the best starting XI, and Kobbie will be treated the same way as other squad members.”
