The Champions League has always been a platform for Europe’s deadliest strikers and most innovative playmakers. Yet, defenders have also played a crucial role in its narrative. With powerful headers during set pieces and stunning long-range goals, some of football’s most unlikely scoring stars have risen from the defense. Recall Sergio Ramos’ dramatic equalizer for Real Madrid against Atlético in the 2014 final, or Roberto Carlos’ thunderous free-kick. Defenders have penned decisive moments in this tournament’s history. For the reigning Champions League holders, Paris Saint-Germain, it was their defensive leader, Brazilian Marquinhos, who initiated their title defense by scoring against Atalanta.

Marquinhos is now making strides on the leaderboard for defenders with the most Champions League goals. Since the 1992/93 season, a select few defenders have showcased their prowess in front of goal in this elite tournament. Whether as adventurous full-backs or commanding center-backs converting set pieces, these players have demonstrated that scoring isn’t solely the domain of forwards. Transfermarkt highlights the defenders who have made their mark in the Champions League’s remarkable attacking legacy.

At the top of the list is the legendary Sergio Ramos from Real Madrid, who netted 17 goals in 142 Champions League matches.
