The Scottish Premiership has recently undergone a market value update via Transfermarkt, revealing significant changes. Over half the players in Scotland's top tier had their valuations altered, with a total of 171 players seeing updates in December. This season has been highly eventful, particularly with new managerial appointments at Glasgow's prominent clubs, Celtic and Rangers.

Rangers parted ways with Russell Martin following a poor start to the season, opting for Danny Röhl as his successor. Meanwhile, Brendan Rodgers stepped down from his role at Celtic, expressing dissatisfaction with the new management under Wilfried Nancy at Parkhead. While the focus often remains on the Old Firm, Hearts have made headlines this season. Following a notable victory over Celtic in Glasgow on Sunday, Hearts currently lead the league, emerging as the biggest beneficiaries of the recent market value updates.

Most Valuable Scottish Premiership Clubs

Following the update, five clubs experienced an increase in squad value: Hearts, Falkirk, St Mirren, Motherwell, and Dundee. The Jambos saw the most significant rise, climbing €2.23 million, thanks to several standout player performances, propelling them ahead of Aberdeen and Hibernian to rank as the third most valuable club in Scotland. Falkirk recorded the highest percentage increase at 16.17%, raising their squad value to €4.85m, though they continue to have the lowest overall valuation in the league. Rangers and Celtic were the largest losers, with respective drops of €10.4m and €6.15m in their market values.

Euan Robertson, UK Content Manager at Transfermarkt, remarked: “Despite significant investment by Brighton’s owner Tony Bloom and his access to expert data analytics, Hearts’ rise to the top of the table is remarkable. Very few anticipated them leading by December. Their recruitment, aided by Bloom’s Jamestown Analytics, has been outstanding. Several Falkirk players have seen their market values adjusted following their impressive performances since promotion. Conversely, both Celtic and Rangers have faced disappointing seasons so far, with only a few players standing out amidst widespread downgrades.”

Scottish Premiership Market Value Update: Biggest Winners

Alexandros Kyziridis has enjoyed the most significant upgrade among Scottish Premiership players, seeing his market value increase by €1.2m to €2m. The 25-year-old joined from Slovakian side Michlovce on a free transfer last summer, with a market value of €375k. After contributing to 10 goals in 19 matches, his value has surged. Other notable upgrades include Liam Scales, Cláudio Braga, and Djeidi Gassama, each receiving €1m hikes. Celtic's young talents Colby Donovan (+€750k) and Callum Osmand (+€500k) are also on the rise, alongside Kilmarnock’s Ben Brannan (+€500k) and Tawanda Maswanhise (+€250k), both recognized for their impressive performances.

Robertson added, “Hearts’ recruitment strategy has unearthed two gems in Kyziridis and Braga. Both have been among the top signings in the league this season, playing crucial roles in Hearts' success. Their combined goal contributions total 24, and both players are expected to see their values continue to rise, placing Hearts in a prime position to achieve substantial profit from their sales. Donovan and Osmand have made notable impressions in Celtic’s first team, while Maswanhise has stood out this season, currently tied as the league’s top scorer with eight goals and set to represent Zimbabwe in the African Cup of Nations.”

Scottish Premiership Market Value Update: Biggest Downgrades

Given the disparity in value between Celtic and Rangers players and the rest of the league, it is unsurprising that they dominate the list of biggest downgrades. Youssef Chermiti and Nasser Djiga suffered the largest drops, each losing €2m to settle at a valuation of €2m. Four Rangers players also saw reductions of €1m, including Oliver Antman, Max Aarons, Mohamed Diomandé, and Derek Cornelius. Seven Celtic players experienced €1m downgrades as well, among them Daizen Maeda, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Reo Hatate, Alistair Johnston, Jota, Michel-Ange Balikwisha, Paulo Bernardo, and Jahmai Simpson-Pusey.

             width="503" />

Robertson commented, “Post-takeover from a US consortium, Rangers heavily invested in the summer, spending €26.73m on new signings. Chermiti was their second most expensive signing ever at €8.6m, but he has struggled with only one goal in 16 matches. Djiga, on loan from Wolves, has seen his value tumble due to inconsistent performances. Several of Celtic's prominent players, such as Maeda and Hatate, have failed to match their previous seasons' performance levels, while Jota, Carter-Vickers, and Johnston have been plagued by long-term injuries.”

Most Valuable Scottish Premiership Players

Mikey Moore remains the most highly valued player in the Scottish Premiership, maintaining a market value of €16m. The 18-year-old has yet to fully shine since joining Rangers on loan from Tottenham, though he has displayed glimpses of his remarkable talent in recent performances. His high valuation stems from being regarded as a top prospect at Tottenham, ensuring a substantial market presence should he become available.

In the top ten, only two other Rangers players are included: Nicolas Raskin (€12m) and Diomande (€7m), with Celtic players dominating the list. Despite a minor downgrade, Maeda remains in second place, with Aberdeens’ Jesper Karlsson (€4m) being the most valuable player outside the Old Firm.

    Understanding Transfermarkt Market Values

Transfermarkt's market values are determined through various pricing models, heavily influenced by the Transfermarkt community, whose members actively discuss and assess player valuations. These values should not be directly equated to transfer fees.

Instead of forecasting a price, the aim is to estimate a player’s expected value in an open market. Factors such as specific transfer scenarios and contextual conditions shape these market valuations, which do not rely on an algorithm. A detailed market value definition can be found here.
