Top 20 Managers Ranked

Comparing the success of different managers presents certain challenges. While a league table is a valuable tool for analysis if both managers operate in the same division, it fails to account for their performances in cup competitions. Although notable runs in domestic and European knockout tournaments can reveal strengths and weaknesses in coaching strategies, they do not capture the gradual progress within the domestic league. To provide a clearer overview of which managers are excelling, Transfermarkt has calculated the points-per-game averages for all head coaches in Europe’s top five leagues, encompassing their performances in domestic leagues and cup competitions.

Leading Managers in Europe This Season
Ranking the top 20 managers in Europe based on their points per game across all competitions, some prominent figures seem to be trailing. A significant example is Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola, who currently ranks 15th, sharing a score of 2.00 points per game with Nottingham Forest’s new manager, Sean Dyche. Chelsea’s Enzo Maresca sits just ahead in 14th place, achieving 2.05 points per game in 19 matches, placing him slightly behind Barcelona’s Hansi Flick, who has earned 2.11 points per game from his initial 18 matches in LaLiga.
As we examine the top 10, we find several managerial powerhouses from Serie A. In 10th place is Inter Milan’s Cristian Chivu, whose defense has excelled in the Champions League but remains slightly off the pace in the Italian league. Chivu ranks just below Roma’s Gian Piero Gasperini, who has made a strong start in the capital since leaving Atalanta and has his team leading the Serie A table. Above them, AC Milan’s Massimiliano Allegri claims 6th place while his team sits second in the league and performs well in the Italian Cup. Joining them are RC Lens’ Pierre Sage in 8th with 2.15 points per game and Bayer Leverkusen’s Kasper Hjulmand in 7th with 2.20 points per game.
In the top five, we see a mix of established European managers and one unexpected name. Paris Saint-Germain’s Luis Enrique holds 5th place with an average of 2.37 points per game. Real Madrid’s Xabi Alonso follows closely in 3rd with 2.44 points per game. Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta is in 2nd place with a notable 2.63 points per game, trailed by Bayern Munich’s Vincent Kompany, who, despite a recent defeat to Arsenal in the Champions League, boasts the highest points-per-game record among all managers in Europe’s top leagues. Surprisingly, RB Leipzig’s new head coach Ole Werner makes an appearance in the top five, securing 4th place with an average of 2.38 points per game due to his team’s strong showings in both the Bundesliga and German Cup.
