Manchester United has announced that it has terminated the contract of head coach Rúben Amorim following a 1-1 draw against Leeds United on Sunday, leaving the club in sixth place in the Premier League standings. The Portuguese manager joined the English side 14 months ago, but his tenure has been underwhelming, with a record of just 1.43 points per game across all competitions, comprising 25 wins, 15 draws, and 23 losses from 63 matches. Darren Fletcher has been named as interim head coach.
In a club statement, Manchester United stated, “Given that we are currently positioned sixth in the Premier League, the leadership has reluctantly decided that now is the right moment for a change. This decision aims to provide the team with the best chance for a higher finish in the league. We would like to extend our gratitude to Rúben for his contributions to the club and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
The pressure for a coaching change intensified after Amorim’s first season, which saw Manchester United finish 15th in the league and struggle in domestic cup competitions. Although he led the team to the UEFA Conference League final, where they lost 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur, the current season has seen the Red Devils win only eight of their first 20 league matches and suffer an early exit from the League Cup at the hands of Grimsby Town.
Amorim’s average of 1.43 points per match represents a significant decline from Erik Ten Hag’s record of 1.84 points per game before he was dismissed in late 2024. This statistic marks Amorim’s tenure as the worst for any Manchester United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, making it apparent that the club felt compelled to make this decision.
Amorim’s comments off the pitch may have sealed his fate, as he expressed discontent with the club’s leadership and a perceived lack of support for potential signings in the January transfer window, as well as frustrations about his role. “It’s going to be like this for 18 months or until the board decides to change,” he remarked following the draw with Leeds, emphasizing that he was the “manager” and not merely a “coach.” He added, “I’m not going to quit. I will do my job until someone else comes here to replace me.”
