Florian Wirtz, Nico Williams, Bradley Barcola, and Nick Woltemade have been added to a lengthy list of failed Bayern Munich transfer attempts this summer. For a while, it seemed that Luis Díaz, the Liverpool forward, could join this list of players who would not or are unlikely to make a move to the Bundesliga champions. Under coach Arne Slot, Díaz enjoyed his best season at Liverpool since arriving from Porto in 2022. However, shifting market conditions have led Liverpool to consider allowing Díaz to leave, with the 28-year-old already having agreed on personal terms with Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich is prepared to offer a maximum of €75 million for Díaz, which would position the transfer as the third-largest in the club's history, following Harry Kane (€95m) and Lucas Hernández (€80m). This transfer fee would also rank among the top three sums Liverpool has ever received. Such a deal could prompt Liverpool to initiate a transfer, helping them finance their own acquisition plans. The club is poised to sign Hugo Ekitiké from Eintracht Frankfurt for €95 million, pushing Liverpool's spending over €300 million this summer, despite only earning €63.3 million through player sales.

Consequently, Liverpool views Bayern as a valuable avenue for generating funds to remain active in the transfer market. In the past, Liverpool has successfully used Bayern to offload more expensive older players. In the summer of 2022, Bayern acquired Sadio Mané for €32 million, but after struggling to find his form with only seven goals and five assists in 25 Bundesliga matches, he was sold to Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr the following summer for €30 million. Now, they appear poised to replicate this strategy with Díaz.

Why Bayern Munich is Eager to Sign 28-Year-Old Winger Luis Díaz

The recent Mané deal should serve as a cautionary tale for Bayern Munich, especially as the club looks to refresh its roster rather than adding players in their late twenties. If the transfer goes through, Díaz will become the 12th player in Bayern's squad aged 28 or older. Notably, key attacking players such as Kingsley Coman (29), Serge Gnabry (30), and Kane (32) are nearing the end of their careers. With several forwards approaching their twilight years, the focus should shift toward younger talent rather than investing heavily in a player who will turn 29 in January.

According to reports from Bild, Díaz is expected to earn €14 million annually at Bayern, slightly more than his current salary at Liverpool. While that figure won't rank him among the club's highest earners, placing him between Alphonso Davies (€15m) and Michael Olise (€13m), it won’t significantly ease Bayern’s future expenditure. The top earners, Jamal Musiala (€25m) and Kane (€24m), are much higher on the pay scale, meaning Díaz's contract won't heavily impact the overall financial picture.

So, why is Bayern Munich eager to secure Díaz's signature? His recent upswing in performance makes him an appealing option for the club. Last season, Díaz had his most productive domestic campaign with Liverpool, netting 13 goals and contributing seven assists in 36 Premier League appearances. Under Slot’s tutelage, he has developed into a more dependable and multifaceted forward. Bayern is in urgent need of reinforcements on the left wing, especially after failing to secure Wirtz, Williams, and Barcola. Negotiations with Stuttgart for Woltemade have also encountered challenges. With Leroy Sané departing for Galatasaray, Coman remains the only left winger on the roster, making it crucial for Bayern to acquire another player in that position.
