As the summer transfer deadline looms, Liverpool remains active in the market, with Marc Guéhi, captain of Crystal Palace, currently undergoing a medical for the Merseyside club after an agreement was reached for €40.4 million. Personal terms have been settled on a five-year contract extending until 2030. Guéhi had only one year left on his contract at Selhurst Park, and Palace was keen to avoid losing him for free next summer.
Earlier this month, Liverpool initiated discussions about signing Guéhi, but negotiations stalled as he sought reassurance regarding playing time in view of the upcoming World Cup. The center-back recently played the full match in Palace’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa, contributing with a stunning goal. Manager Oliver Glasner remarked post-match, “He’s so professional, and it was clear he would play today.”
Glasner emphasized the necessity of retaining Guéhi for a successful season, conveying to the chairman that it was beyond his control. Now, the manager will have to find a way to fill the void left by his captain. With striker Alexander Isak also anticipated to be unveiled as a new signing for Liverpool in a Premier League record deal today, the Reds’ expenditure will surpass €500 million once both transfer deadline day deals are finalized. This would not only set a record for this transfer window but also establish the highest amount ever spent by a club in a single transfer window, exceeding Chelsea’s €464 million spree in the summer of 2023.
