You find yourself bouncing inside Anfield as the home sections empty in a hurry. You watch the United players approach, lifting Maguire—the hero—forward to bask in the cheers. As they head back to the dressing rooms, you remain rooted to the spot, continuing to sing.
In the concourses, people stream down the staircases, friends who had been separated spotting one another and rushing together to celebrate. There are slapped handshakes, big bear hugs, and jubilant shouts. You might even make your way across Stanley Park, some already on the phone to friends and family who couldn’t be there. Though the sky hangs dark, everything else feels illuminated.
Before long, you’re on a train back to Manchester, surrounded by fellow Reds sitting on the floors or standing closely packed together, yet all radiating happiness. Conversations flow with praise for Amad, De Ligt, Mount, and Yoro, as well as for Lammens, Mbeumo, and Cunha. This reflects a strong team performance, but it’s the latter three who truly stand out. We know the players United sign have skill, but it takes character to wear that jersey. There’s no better test than Anfield, and they passed with flying colors.
