Kota Takai: The J-League defensive star who has joined Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur announced their latest summer signing on Tuesday, confirming the acquisition of Kawasaki Frontale defender Kota Takai. The deal, reportedly valued at €5.8 million, sees the 20-year-old defender commit to a five-year contract with Spurs, making him the sixth most expensive sale in J-League history. So, who exactly is Kota Takai and what potential does he bring to Tottenham?

Assessing Kota Takai’s Talent

Takai emerged from the youth academy of Kawasaki Frontale and made his senior debut in an AFC Champions League match against Guangzhou on April 18, 2022, at just 17 years and seven months old, becoming the youngest player in the club’s history. Although he had to wait until he was 18 years and seven months to make his J-League debut, he quickly became a valuable asset for the “Azzurro Nero.”

“Despite being only in his second year of high school at the time, he signed a professional contract with Kawasaki Frontale, making him the youngest player in the club’s history to do so,” noted Yuta Izawa, a data scout for Transfermarkt. “There were high expectations for him from the very beginning, especially considering that Kawasaki Frontale has produced notable talents like Kaoru Mitoma (Brighton) and Ao Tanaka (Leeds). In the summer of 2022, while still with the U18 team, he played in a preseason match against PSG.”

Last season, Takai made 28 appearances across all competitions, solidifying his place as a starting central defender. Following impressive performances at the Olympic Games, he made his national team debut in a 7-0 victory over China in the Asian World Cup qualifiers last September. “His name gained prominence in Japan after his international performances,” Izawa remarked, adding that Takai was named the J.League’s Best Young Player after becoming a regular for his club.

By this time, Takai had built a reputation as one of Japan’s most promising defensive talents, as evidenced by his skyrocketing market value. Currently valued at €2.5 million, he not only stands as the highest-valued player in his squad but also ranks third in the entire Japanese league. His market value has seen an impressive 456% increase over the past year, the highest in the league.

Recently, he played a pivotal role in his team’s run to the final of the AFC Champions League Elite, participating in every minute of the knockout rounds. Notably, he helped contain star strikers Jhon Durán and Cristiano Ronaldo during a crucial match against Al-Nassr, which ended in a 3-2 victory. Although his team ultimately lost in the final to Al-Ahli, the competition significantly enhanced Takai’s profile on the global stage.

What are Takai’s key attributes? Izawa explains that he possesses all the requisite skills to thrive in the physically demanding Premier League. “He’s tall and strong in aerial duels, with great heading ability. He is physically robust and quick, which makes him difficult to outmuscle. He excels at initiating play from the back, but his greatest asset is his poise in high-pressure situations,” he said.

Why Tottenham is Signing Kota Takai

At 6ft 4ins tall and displaying excellent dribbling and passing ability, Tottenham believes Takai is prepared to transition from the J-League to the Premier League. It remains to be seen whether he will be integrated into Thomas Frank’s first-team plans immediately or be loaned out this season. A look at Tottenham’s roster indicates significant competition for a starting position.

Within Tottenham’s defensive lineup, Takai will face competition not just from established players like Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, but also from Radu Drăgușin and Ben Davies. With Ashley Phillips returning from loan and the recent signing of Kevin Danso, along with the addition of Luka Vuskovic who joined for €11 million, Takai will indeed have his work cut out for him.

However, Izawa believes Takai is ready for this new challenge in England. “Yes, I think he’s prepared,” he affirmed. “His biggest strength is maintaining composure on the international stage. In the Champions League semi-final, he kept Ronaldo and Durán at bay with his performance. It’s difficult to predict exactly how he’ll fare in the Premier League, but he certainly has the potential to succeed at that level.”
