Talents Calendar

At just 17, Deniz Dönmezer is already in his third season playing in the Süper Lig. He stands out as a prime example of the emerging wave of talented goalkeepers in Türkiye. On matchday 37 of the 2023/24 season, he made history by debuting as the youngest goalkeeper in the Turkish first division at just 15 years, 7 months, and 26 days old. He was subbed in during injury time with the match score at 1-2 between Adana Demirspor and Antalyaspor.
To everyone’s surprise, Dönmezer began the new season as the first-choice keeper, surpassing the experience of Vedat Karakuş. His season opener was a match against the giants Fenerbahçe, where he played in front of 38,000 fans. Dönmezer expressed to Transfermarkt, “Even though my appearance against Antalyaspor was brief, it helped me get over my nerves. Knowing I would be in goal for 90 minutes against Fenerbahçe was the greatest opportunity of my life. I left everything on the pitch; it was an incredible experience.”
Top clubs like Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, Beşiktaş, and Trabzonspor are taking notice of his talent. Additionally, scouts from abroad, including Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City, and Tottenham, have been keeping an eye on him, with Ajax contemplating a €5 million offer. Dönmezer shared, “Although I am young, I am honored that my name is being linked to prestigious clubs. It has been my childhood dream, and I have put in the hard work to make it a reality.”
Standing at 190cm, Dönmezer is a modern goalkeeper who is physically commanding, actively engages in the buildup play, and demonstrates excellent positioning and reflexes. He maintains a calm demeanor, allowing him to handle high-pressure moments effectively. “I’m not afraid of making mistakes in training,” he remarked. “Preparing myself mentally allows me to remain relaxed and confident during games.”
Netminder Inspired by Neuer
Dönmezer looks up to Bayern Munich’s captain Manuel Neuer as his role model. It’s not just Neuer’s impressive saves that inspire him but also how he organizes his defense and his overall playing style. “Neuer is my idol,” Dönmezer stated. “His ability to engage in the game and take responsibility motivates me immensely.”

Even while Adana Demirspor struggled, sitting at the bottom of the league with a point deduction for financial issues, Dönmezer still stood out. With nine saves, he helped his team secure their first victory of the season on matchday 16 against Beşiktaş (2-1). He was instrumental in stopping three out of ten penalties faced. Despite the challenges, he participated in numerous high-pressure situations and ended the season with 18 matches played, conceding 46 goals.
As Adana Demirspor’s situation worsened, Dönmezer opted to return to the Süper Lig, joining Kayserispor to continue his career in a more stable environment. Competing against Bilal Bayazıt and Onurcan Piri, he has made only one start thus far. “I share a great rapport with Bilal and Onur,” he commented. “Our competition inspires me, and it motivates me to improve daily.”
His debut with Kayserispor against Ankara Keciörengücü (0-2 a.e.t) may have ended in defeat, but Dönmezer regarded it as a significant moment. “Even though we lost, it was still huge for me,” he reflected. “I believe that playing more frequently will enhance my performance and potential.” He aims to refine his long-ball timing, buildup play, and concentration.
A youth national team player, Dönmezer aspires to follow in the footsteps of renowned keepers such as Uğurcan Çakir, Altay Bayındır, Mert Günok, and Berke Özer. “Representing my country at the national level is my dream,” he stated. “I work diligently every day and hope to achieve that dream.” He is also receptive to opportunities abroad to further his development.
Aiming for the Premier League
“My ultimate goal is to play in the top leagues in Europe, but first, I want to focus on my development at Kayserispor and honor the trust the people of this city have placed in me,” Dönmezer expressed. When asked about his dream destination, he said, “The Premier League, due to its competitiveness and tempo, is where I aspire to play. It is regarded as the most challenging league worldwide, which is inspiring to me.”
Dönmezer believes his early start at 15 gives him an edge for future challenges. “Entering professional football at such a young age will prepare me to confront upcoming hurdles head-on. My hope is to be playing in the Premier League by the time I’m 20. I take pride in the global recognition of my success and will strive to maintain it.”
