As the January transfer window approaches, the Jupiler Pro League has been updated on Transfermarkt, with 453 players in Belgium's top division receiving new market valuations. Christos Tzolis retains his spot at the top with a market value of €30 million, but significant changes have occurred further down the list. Notably, 18-year-old Genk midfielder Konstantinos Karetsas has seen his market value rise to €28 million, tying him for second place with Club Brugge’s Joel Ordóñez.

“Expectations were high for Karetsas this season, but he had a slow start with only one assist to show for it,” explained Bart Tamsyn, Area Manager for Belgium. “However, after being shifted to the right wing by coach Thorsten Fink, he flourished, scoring two goals and providing eight assists in nine matches in that position. His contributions have been crucial for Genk as they aim for a top-six finish, justifying a €5 million increase in his market value from €23 million to €28 million.”

Over at RSC Anderlecht, another teenage talent is among the biggest gainers in this update. “Nathan De Cat has become a vital part of the midfield for the Belgian record champions, who have recently enjoyed a resurgence with five consecutive wins,” Tamsyn said. “With his contract running until 2027, there’s a possibility he could be sold this winter, with reports linking him to clubs like BVB and Bayern Munich. Anderlecht is unlikely to accept less than €25 million for him.” De Cat’s market value surged by an impressive 142.9%, rising from €7 million to €17 million.

Belgium Market Values: Talents to Watch – Brugge with Several Standouts

De Cat is certainly a player to keep an eye on, but he isn't the only promising talent in a league known for developing stars. “There are emerging talents, though it’s still early to determine who will follow in the footsteps of Karetsas or De Cat,” Tamsyn remarked. “At Antwerp, Xander Dierckx has made waves, becoming the first player born in 2009 to debut in the Jupiler Pro League and seeing his value rise by €400,000 to €400,000. Other young players making a mark include his 17-year-old teammate Youssef Hamdaoui (+€750,000 to €1 million), 17-year-old Moncef Zekri (+€1.5 million to €4 million), and 18-year-olds Ian Struyf (+€250,000 to €400,000) at KV Mechelen and Davis Opoku (+€300,000 to €500,000) at OH Leuven. Nineteen-year-old Lucas Mbamba is also included in this rising talent pool, increasing from €450,000 to €600,000 at KVC Westerlo.

At Brugge, while Tzolis has seen his growth stagnate after a slow start, some teammates are thriving. Forward Carlos Forbs has particularly stood out. “His speed is a significant challenge for opposing defenses,” Tamsyn noted. “In a 3-3 match against Barcelona, he scored twice and assisted once. Recently, he also debuted for the Portuguese national team.” Consequently, Forbs’ market value rose by €5 million, from €10 million to €15 million.

Teammate Aleksandar Stanković also saw his value rise to €15 million, up from €2 million. “He shares similarities with Joaquin Seys (value unchanged at €15 million)," Tamsyn added. “Both players have been reliable for Club Brugge. However, as the team faces challenges, their individual performance levels cannot be elevated significantly. Nevertheless, both have made their international debuts, and there’s little doubt they will eventually transfer to a club in one of the top five leagues.”

Understanding Transfermarkt Market Values

The market values of players on Transfermarkt are determined through various pricing models, with significant input from the Transfermarkt community, which thoroughly discusses and evaluates player values. It's important to note that market values do not directly equate to transfer fees.

The aim is to reflect an expected market value in a free market, taking into account different transfer modalities and situational factors. Transfermarkt does not employ an algorithm in this process.
