Former LAFC midfielder José Cifuentes has made his return to Major League Soccer. On Friday, Toronto FC announced the loan acquisition of the 26-year-old Ecuadorian from Rangers FC, valid until June 30, 2026. This move came just ahead of the closing of the MLS secondary transfer window on Thursday and includes an option to purchase.

“We are thrilled to welcome José to Toronto FC,” said Jason Hernandez, the club's general manager, in a statement. “Cifu will enhance our midfield, having previously proven his capability at an elite level in MLS. His skill set will fit well with our current players and play a crucial role as we continue building for the future.”

While Cifuentes had a challenging time at Rangers and during a loan spell in Brazil with Cruzeiro, he appeared to find his rhythm last season in Greece with Aris Thessaloniki. He recorded one goal and three assists over 31 matches across all competitions, marking his first consistent playing time since departing MLS. However, his market value has since declined from €6m to €5m, significantly lower than his peak valuation of €12m while at LAFC in 2022.

Cifuentes to Toronto – Can the midfielder rediscover his LAFC form in Canada?

Cifuentes played a pivotal role in LAFC's success during their winning campaign for the Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup in 2022, contributing seven goals and six assists in 33 regular-season matches. He showcased versatility, filling various roles including that of a no.10 in a 4-2-3-1 formation. “A typical two-way box-to-box midfielder has a good shot, is skillful, and very dynamic,” noted LAFC assistant coach Marc Dos Santos in a 2023 interview with Transfermarkt.

Now, it will be up to Toronto FC head coach Robin Fraser to maximize Cifuentes’ potential. This transfer window has provided Fraser with ample resources, as TFC also secured Colorado Rapids midfielder Djordje Mihailovic in a deal worth $8 million plus an additional $1 million. This transaction ranks among the largest in TFC's history. Alongside Mihailovic, Cifuentes is expected to form the core of a refreshed Toronto roster, aiming to revive the club's illustrious history.
