The former Reds defender acknowledges the high stakes of the upcoming clash between United and City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, yet he remains optimistic about the early performances of Ruben Amorim’s squad this season.
While attending the Pro Am Padel Tour in Stockport, the ex-England international expressed hope that the team can replicate last season’s impressive victory against Pep Guardiola’s side.
“I understand that we haven’t had the best start, but I was really impressed with our performance against Arsenal; we should have come away with a win,” he stated.
“We were quite unlucky not to secure the victory. I also thought we played well in the first half against Fulham; although the second half wasn’t as strong, there were still encouraging signs for fans when comparing it to last season.
“So I don’t believe it’s all negative. Of course, the recent performance against Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup was disappointing, but this is the Manchester derby after all.”
