Over the past few years, Jonathan David has been frequently rumored to transfer to a top club during every transfer window. Currently, he is on the brink of joining the esteemed Italian club Juventus. The 25-year-old forward took to social media in May to announce his departure from Lille once his contract concludes at the end of the season. After being linked to various clubs, Transfermarkt now confirms a report by Fabrizio Romano stating that David has reached a verbal agreement with Juventus, making a deal imminent.
In a heartfelt video message in May, the Canadian men’s national team star bid farewell to his club and supporters, with whom he scored 109 goals and provided 30 assists in 231 appearances since 2020. David won the Ligue 1 title in 2021 and followed it up with a Super Cup victory the next year. This announcement is a considerable financial blow for Lille, as the striker was their most valuable player, boasting a market value of €45 million. Though there were opportunities to sell him for a substantial fee, other clubs did not meet Lille’s financial expectations. David’s transfer will make him the second most expensive free agent, following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move from Liverpool to Real Madrid ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.
Where Does Jonathan David Fit in at Juventus?
As Juventus seeks a new striker, David’s arrival could be timely. The loan for Randal Kolo Muani expires on July 15, and there are uncertainties surrounding Dusan Vlahovic’s future with the Bianconeri as his contract runs out next summer. With this situation, Juventus is in urgent need of reinforcements up front. David has proven to be a reliable striker for both Lille and the Canadian national team, scoring 35 goals in 66 appearances. While he may not fit the traditional mold of a number nine, his excellent positioning in the box and dynamic play, combined with his international experience, make him an asset to the team.
