After Chelsea's failure to secure the signing of 20-year-old winger Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup, the deal is now on track as the summer transfer window is officially open. The Premier League club had two offers rejected just before the tournament for the U21 England international. Gittens subsequently traveled with Dortmund to the U.S. for the Club World Cup, where the speculation about his transfer continued. However, Dortmund has now confirmed that an agreement is in place.

According to various reports, Dortmund had previously turned down an offer of €35 million for Gittens just days ago. They were seeking around €60 million for the winger, emphasizing this by rejecting a second offer of €50 million. Chelsea's hopes of convincing Dortmund with their improved offer were dashed when the Bundesliga club raised their asking price to €65 million. Ultimately, Chelsea has agreed to pay approximately €64 million for the player, who has also settled on personal terms for a contract that extends until 2032.

BVB Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl remarked, "The negotiations with Chelsea were challenging, but we are pleased to realize our expectations and gain planning security. Jamie is an exceptional player who has brought us great joy. It was his desire to take the next step in his career with Chelsea, and we wish him all the best and much success." Chelsea has yet to officially confirm the agreement.

What Can Chelsea Expect from Gittens?

So, what can Chelsea supporters look forward to with Gittens? Signed by Dortmund on a free transfer in 2020, he has the potential to be a rising star within the club. In the 2024/25 season, Gittens began to show his true capabilities, scoring five goals and providing four assists in just 15 league games, becoming a regular starter under Nuri Sahin. However, as Dortmund's fortunes dwindled and a coaching change brought Niko Kovac in, Gittens found himself increasingly benched.

As Gittens fell out of favor, Dortmund became increasingly inclined to sell the U21 international despite his talents. While he possesses impressive speed and excels in one-on-one situations on the wing, he is often seen as somewhat limited in his overall play. Unlike his more versatile teammate Karim Adeyemi, Gittens struggles to adapt to various positions, and his finishing ability is considered less lethal. Furthermore, Kovac’s emphasis on defensive contributions from attackers led to a preference for other players over Gittens, who has been perceived to require improvement in his work rate.

Despite some limitations, there remains a strong market for Gittens, with several clubs interested, although Dortmund has adjusted their initial €100 million expectations. His speed, albeit with limited tactical awareness, positions him as a potentially valuable player in the Premier League. As a result, while a deal seems likely, Chelsea will still need to meet Dortmund's demands to finalize the transfer.
