On Monday, Aston Villa officially announced the signing of winger Jadon Sancho from Manchester United on loan. The Birmingham club is set to cover 80% of the former England international's salary during his stay and will pay an initial fee to secure his move. With just 12 months remaining on his contract at Old Trafford, Manchester United retains the option to extend it for an additional year. This transfer marks Sancho's third loan in two years, following previous stints at Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund.

The England international was anticipated to join Chelsea on a permanent basis this summer; however, the Blues ended up paying a €5.8 million fee after not fulfilling an obligation-to-buy clause. While Chelsea was enthusiastic about retaining Sancho, the winger was not inclined to accept a wage reduction. Sancho currently earns a substantial salary at Old Trafford and declined a recent opportunity to move to Roma.

Aston Villa has had a challenging summer, facing restrictions in the transfer market due to Financial Fair Play rules. The club has also struggled at the start of the Premier League season, failing to secure a win in their first three games and finding themselves near the bottom of the league table. They are the only team yet to score this season, and manager Unai Emery hopes Sancho can provide the creative flair the squad desperately needs. Last season, Sancho had a positive spell at Chelsea, contributing to 15 goals in 41 appearances and even found the net in the Europa Conference League final. Manchester United invested €85 million to sign Sancho from Borussia Dortmund in 2021, but he has yet to replicate the impressive form he displayed in the Bundesliga.
