We have witnessed numerous staff members thrive after committing themselves to the development of our players at United. Coaches like Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town), Justin Cochrane (Spurs and England), Dave Hughes (Newport County), Paul McShane (Huddersfield), and Tom Huddlestone (Birmingham City) are just a few examples of those now succeeding in first-team roles. Many dedicated professionals are making significant contributions throughout the football community.
At every level of English and European football, gifted players and staff who began their journeys in our Academy are making their mark, while others who have moved on from the sport continue to carry the invaluable life lessons they learned at Carrington.
I’ll always remember a moment when Joe, then an U13, bravely recited a poem he had written in front of 2,000 attendees at a memorial service for the Munich Air Disaster. His courage in representing the club so eloquently was just as commendable as any achievement on the field.
Similarly, a young boy who experienced a heartbreaking family loss showed up for training the very next day. Amidst the sorrow for his situation, I felt a profound sense of comfort knowing that our club had become his safe haven. In that moment of hardship, he chose to be here, where he could be himself and momentarily escape his challenges. This is a testament to the exceptional staff we have, who go above and beyond to support not just the players, but each other as well. I can attest to this, as when I lost my father last year, this place embraced me as an extended family, providing support during a difficult time.
