After a challenging season last year, Manchester United is adopting a more strategic approach in this summer’s transfer window. With specific targets in mind, the club has already invested €153 million in acquiring Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford and Matheus Cunha from Wolves. Reports suggest that the Red Devils aim to exceed the €200 million mark by signing a new No.9 before the window closes.

This situation puts the future of current No.9, Rasmus Højlund, in a precarious position. The 22-year-old forward scored only 10 goals in 52 appearances last season, prompting speculation about a potential exit from Manchester United. He has been linked with clubs like Inter Milan, Lazio, and his former team Atalanta. If United can recover some of the €77.8 million spent on Højlund in 2023, it might enable them to secure a new striker. However, should the club actually sell their young talent, or could he be on the verge of a breakthrough in the Premier League?

Assessing Rasmus Højlund's Performance at Manchester United

While many fans may wish to give a young player time to adapt to the rigors of the Premier League, it’s hard to ignore that Højlund hasn’t quite matched his hefty transfer fee since arriving in England. The statistics reveal a concerning trend; his goals per 90 minutes have dropped from 0.57 at Copenhagen, 0.60 at Sturm Graz, and 0.47 at Atalanta to just 0.37 at Manchester United.

These figures are somewhat misleading, as Højlund had played significantly fewer minutes at his previous clubs (4,502 total) compared to his time at United (6,410 minutes) over the past two seasons. This indicates that United may have signed an inexperienced player to lead their attack in Højlund, highlighting how raw his talent is. However, it also suggests the potential for significant improvement in the coming seasons if he remains with the club.

Is There Still Hope for Højlund This Season?

One positive aspect for Højlund this season is the addition of new attacking players joining Ruben Amorim. While Mbeumo and Cunha are primarily goal-scorers, they brought a total of 14 assists in the Premier League last season. Their presence could alleviate some of the scoring pressure on Højlund and offer him better service than he received last season.

Despite having playmakers like Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo, Manchester United had only these two players in the top 50 assist-makers in the league last season. In contrast, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City had four, four, and five assist providers, respectively. If Mbeumo and Cunha can elevate their game this season and bolster United's chances, it could lead to a significant improvement over last season’s disappointing offensive performance and allow Højlund to score more frequently.
