The Europa League has returned this week, featuring 36 clubs vying for a spot in the final scheduled for May in Istanbul. Although the Europa League may lack the prestige of the Champions League, it remains a highly sought-after trophy for many elite European teams. Last season, Tottenham Hotspur broke a 17-year trophy drought by defeating Manchester United in the final.

This season, two Premier League clubs are among the favorites: Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa, which are the most valuable teams in the competition. Unai Emery, the manager of Villa, is the most decorated in the club's history, boasting four titles—three with Sevilla and one with Villarreal. Although the UEFA Cup was rebranded as the Europa League in 2009, we're keen to explore which managers have amassed the most points since the competition's inception in the 1971/72 season. Let's take a closer look!

Not surprisingly, Aston Villa's Emery leads the Europa League's all-time points tally with 214. The 52-year-old manager has claimed the title more times than anyone else, securing three consecutive victories with Sevilla from 2014 to 2016 and another with Villarreal in 2021. He also reached the final with Arsenal in 2019. As shown in the graphic above, Giovanni Trapattoni comes in second, having accumulated 180 points over 98 matches with eight different clubs. The Italian has won the competition three times, twice with Juventus and once with Inter Milan in 1991.

Jorge Jesus has the most points in the competition without ever winning it, having finished as a runner-up twice with Benfica. Last season, Jose Mourinho surpassed his mentor, Sir Bobby Robson, after coaching Fenerbahce in the Europa League. Mourinho began his coaching career as the interpreter for the legendary Englishman at Porto, later becoming his assistant and following him to Barcelona.
