The countdown has begun with just nine months to go until the World Cup makes its return. This year, the tournament will align with its traditional schedule during the British summer. In June, the USA, Canada, and Mexico will co-host the 2026 World Cup—the largest edition in history—with 48 nations vying for the sport's ultimate prize. Notably, only eight countries have ever won the World Cup.

Four years ago, during Qatar’s winter World Cup, Argentina captured the trophy for the third time, as captain Lionel Messi finally received the one accolade that had previously eluded him. With less than a year to go before the excitement resumes at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, 21 nations have already secured their spots. Let’s take a look at who has booked their tickets.

We begin with the three host nations. The USA, Canada, and Mexico are automatically qualified and will showcase matches on home soil next summer. The South American qualification concluded in September, with Argentina, Ecuador, Colombia, Uruguay, Brazil, and Paraguay all confirming their participation. Bolivia still has a chance but must win a play-off to advance.

From the Asian qualification, Iran, Uzbekistan, Jordan, South Korea, Japan, and Australia have already earned their seats to North America. In Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, and Ghana—the latest team to qualify—have punched their tickets. New Zealand has also secured their (very long) flight to the World Cup next summer. Among these qualifiers, Uzbekistan and Jordan will make their World Cup debuts in North America.
