On Monday, Manchester United officially announced their second major signing of the summer transfer window: Bryan Mbeumo has joined the club from Brentford on a five-year contract. Reports suggest that Old Trafford paid an initial €75 million for the 26-year-old winger, with potential add-ons that could increase the total to approximately €82 million. Even without these extras, Mbeumo's transfer places him as the seventh most expensive signing in the history of the club.

“The chance to join Manchester United was an opportunity I couldn't pass up," Mbeumo shared in a club statement. “I've always aspired to play for this team, the one I supported while growing up. I'm determined to improve every day and believe that under Ruben Amorim's guidance and alongside world-class talents, I can reach new heights.” Mbeumo departs Brentford as their record transfer, nearly doubling the previous record set by Ivan Toney's €42 million move to Al-Ahli last season.

Currently valued at €55 million, Mbeumo was linked with several top Premier League clubs this summer, including Liverpool, Arsenal, and Newcastle. Despite the high transfer fee, securing Mbeumo is a significant achievement for Ruben Amorim's squad amidst fierce interest in the player.

Why Bryan Mbeumo is One of the Most Sought-After Wingers in the Premier League

Mbeumo joined Brentford from French side Troyes in 2019 for €6.5 million, the club's second-highest transfer fee at that time, just behind Ollie Watkins' signing for €7.22 million from Exeter in 2017. After getting promoted with Troyes, where he scored 11 goals in 37 Ligue 2 matches, Mbeumo made just four appearances in Ligue 1 before Brentford brought him in as a 19-year-old. He quickly adapted to English football, netting 23 goals and providing 19 assists across two Championship seasons, although his contributions were often overshadowed by standout strikers like Watkins and Toney.

Upon promotion to the Premier League, there are always questions about whether players can handle the step up, given the gap in quality between the Premier League and the Championship. Mbeumo, however, has demonstrated he belongs at this level, scoring 42 goals and assisting 30 times in 136 top-flight appearances, with his performance improving since his debut in a notable 2-0 victory against Arsenal in August 2021.

Last season, Mbeumo began strongly, scoring seven goals and providing three assists in his first 15 matches before an ankle injury interrupted his momentum. His goals per game ratio of 0.46 is bettered only by Mohamed Salah (0.67), Cole Palmer (0.52), and Michael Olise (0.53) since last season. Mbeumo has consistently thrived when he is the focal point of the attack. Following Toney's suspension during the first half of last season, he excelled, a trend that has continued into the current campaign.

How Bryan Mbeumo Thrived Without Ivan Toney

Ivan Toney became one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe with his impressive 22-goal tally for Brentford in the 2022/23 season, becoming the team’s most valuable asset. However, a ban for betting violations in May 2023 kept him off the pitch for eight months. Last summer, Toney made a transfer to Al-Ahli for €42 million on deadline day, shifting Brentford's on-field dynamic. Without Toney as the primary target, Mbeumo significantly increased his performance.

Mbeumo's statistics without Toney are particularly impressive. In the 69 matches played alongside Toney, he scored just eight goals and recorded nine assists, a rate of 0.12 goals and 0.13 assists per game. However, in the 64 matches without Toney, Mbeumo scored 32 goals and registered 17 assists, resulting in a markedly improved rate of 0.50 goals and 0.27 assists per game. This suggests that Mbeumo flourishes when he's the primary offensive player.

Where Will Bryan Mbeumo Fit in at Manchester United?

Mbeumo is known for his powerful left foot and performs best when cutting in from the right-wing. This could have hindered a potential move to Arsenal, considering Bukayo Saka firmly occupies that spot. It seems likely that Mbeumo will take on the 'right no.10' role in Amorim's attacking setup, which may affect the positioning of young talent Amad Diallo, who has shown glimpses of brilliance for United. Diallo might shift back to the right-wing-back position. With Matheus Cunha already added to the squad and likely to occupy the 'left no.10' position, Manchester United could see a revamped attacking lineup this season. After a challenging previous season, successfully signing Mbeumo could be seen as a bright spot for the club, especially given the competitive nature of the transfer market.
